ACA's Northern Tier Heights Alternative Route is closed between Old Mill and Wilson Mills Road. The Bridges over the Chagrin River(River Road & Old Mill) are under construction. There is no safe detour.

On the second Sunday in the month of June every year is a bike ride sponsored by The Cleveland Touring Club. This ride is called "Sunday In June" and it is 25,50,62,100 miles long. It connects to the "Underground Railway Route" in Burton, Ohio at The Geauga Historical Center. Great rest stops, SAG service, and a "hot" lunch is served on this ride as well as being Northeast Ohio's classic local bike tour. For more information contact http://www.clevelandtouringclub.org for registration forms and location.

Connecting ACA Routes / NYC to Cleveland: PENNSLYVANIA
« on: November 20, 2008, 10:14:15 am »
NYC to Cleveland eh ? First take NY bike route 9 north to Albany, Second take the The Erie Canal-way to either Lackanna or Buffalo(This is NT Section 10), Use either the Seaway Trail or NT Section 9 into Cleveland. I live on The Northern Tier Section 9 and the route into Cleveland divides into two distinct routes: Regular or Heights Alternative. Regular route goes along Lake Erie into Cleveland via SR283 & various streets in Northeast Ohio. Heights Alternative goes along SR 84 to SR 174(River Rd)into Gates Mills. The route is very hilly at Old Mill(Try Berkshire Rd it's a easier climb and meets at Gates Mills Blvd) to Gates Mills Blvd then goes back into Cleveland. These are my suggestions and good luck on your trip.

Urban Cycling / top bicycle-friendly cities and towns

On the Northern Tier route you will run into a town called Mentor, Ohio. Watch out the people do not like cyclists at all. Even though it's a "Bicycle Friendly town" someone forgot to remind the people of it. People use horns, taunts or various other stupidities here so watch it this town stinks for cyclists !

This might help or not but try http://www.clevelandbikes.org for free use of maps for cycling only from NOACA. They show various ways through Cleveland and their experience level needed. They also show ACA routes as well

Underground Railroad / UR route in Ohio

Does anyone know the route through Ohio? People I've talked to didn't even know that Adventure Cycling has a new route through Northeast Ohio. One person was really surprised about the route because his church is practical in the way.

I swear by Cateye "Wireless" computers because wired units had tendency short out on long rides. So I switched and it works like a dream.

Gear Talk / Mirrors

I currently use a Chuck Harris design mirror it's a hell of lot better than a blackburn helmet mirror. I like because it doesn't move like that other mirror and works on all helmets. Besides where are you going to find one with your club's logo ?

The Bridge over Chagrin River will be out next year without a safe detour. So think about it what would you do get around it ?

Routes / Detour on The Norther Tier
« on: January 01, 2008, 07:24:27 am »
Heads up:
Part of the Northern Tier is closed off to traffic in Ohio. Please look at the Northern Tier Map section 120 and look for Salida Rd/SR283. This is under construction and is extremely hazardous to ride in or around. Salida Rd at SR283 is blocked off for traffic, there is NO westbound traffic allowed, and all down to single lane eastbound on SR283. Hints:Westbound follow the detour signs get to Lakeshore Blvd follow that or take the detour to Chagrin Dr and go down it and runs into Salida. Eastbound follow westbound route but remember to follow eastbound but it's single lane traffic with No Shoulder/Heavy Gravel.
Watch this section it won't be finished until 2008 or 2009. :8o:

Routes / Northern Tier
« on: June 26, 2007, 11:10:27 am »
Yesterday I tried to help a Korean cyclist riding through Mentor, Ohio. He used US Route 20 instead of the recommended routes of Adventure Cycling. Mentor Ave(US Route 20 is unsafe for ANY cycling). He was fingered, blown at,and riding all over the road(Very Dangerous). I tried to help him but he didn't want to be helped. So if you are traveling East to West or the Northern Tier Route avoid US 20 from Ashtabula to Cleveland, Ohio at all costs. This is my personal recommendation to anyone touring in Ohio. Please follow assigned routes.

Routes / Going through Canada
« on: February 06, 2007, 06:29:15 am »
Is there a way to get to the canal-way without going through Canada? New rules are that you might need a passport to enter Canada just to enter and reenter into the US. Any route be appreciated.
