You can take the ferry from Seattle to Bainbridge Island, and cross the Hood Canal Bridge to ride to Port Angeles and Forks. The coast of Wa is nice along Highway 101 all the way down to Oregon and beyond.
The San Juan and Gulf Islands are great to tour as well. Sept is usually the best month for weather in the Northwest.

You can always get a 48-spoke wheel hand built and never have to worry about a broken spoke. Even if one does break, the wheel won't go out of true.

Urban Cycling / Re: commuting by bike

I bike from Seattle to Mercer Island every day. It's about a 15-mile round trip and when the sun is shining, crossing the I-90 bridge on the bike lane is glorious. On the way home it's always fun to pass all the cars that are moving at a snail's pace.

I'll add Air Canada to the bike friendly list. I only paid 50 bucks for the bike to travel with me. Most airlines seem to charge 150 dollars each way now.

BTW, what are the bike friendly airlines? They all seem to be about the same nowadays.

You can't go wrong with the LHT. It rides even better loaded. I use mine as a daily commuter and have done 5000+ mile tours on it.

I rode across Canada alone last summer and there was hardly a day that I didn't meet another cyclist at camp or along the road. You are more likely to meet and chat with people when alone.

I completed the ride by mainly staying on the Trans-Canada highway except for going north to Jasper on highway 5. Some parts of the Trans Canada in Ontario were pretty bad with little or no shoulder, especially between Mattawa and Pembroke. There is quite a bit of construction going on in that area and things should improve in the next couple of years.

Thanks for the tip tourista829. I've ordered the book "Canada by Bicycle" by Steve Langston which should be helpful as well.

Routes / Route maps for cross Canada ride?
« on: May 28, 2011, 09:03:01 am »
Greetings, A newbie here. I'm planning to set out from Victoria and ride across Canada starting in June. I haven't been able to find any cycling maps like the one offered by the ACA of US routes. Do such maps exist in Canada?
Thanks!
