Routes / Google biking maps
« on: October 17, 2012, 01:34:29 pm »
Has anyone else looked at a new feature from Google called "Google biking maps"?  It's currently in beta status so I'm a bit hesitent to use it, but I mapped a few trips around here in Orlando, and it seems pretty good.

I'm also quite interested here in the responses as I'm considering a touring bike as well and start my long distant tours.  From the little research I've done so far, the Trek 520 seems to be the current industry standard.

Routes / Re: Rural Pennsylvania Roads Still Safe?
« on: May 21, 2012, 09:11:58 am »
I too am considering a ride through PA.  My desired destination will have me using Route J from the BicyclePA maps, with a slight correction on the northern part of that trail to get me farther west to reach my destination in upstate NY.  Can anyone comment on how good or bad Route J is?

Routes / Riding through Pennsylvania

I'm considering a ride up the Atlantic Coast route from Florida to just north of Baltimore where I'll then be heading towards the western part of upstate NY.  I found a PA route map that I've listed below and would like to hear from anyone familiar with these areas.

General Discussion / Re: Pacing on a long distance ride
« on: February 06, 2012, 08:23:18 am »
We're at about the same level John, I'm 53 so I know how important it is to pace yourself.  I did back to back 40 mile rides this past weekend, with a 15-20 minute rest and snack at the 27 mile mark.  The legs felt really strong from start to finish, even stronger on Sunday, so that is promising.  I'm going to work up to back to back 80 mile rides, just to see if my body can handle it without too much difficulty.  My typical weekend ride is a non-stop 25-35 mile ride, so anything over 40 is pushing my usual boundaries.

Did you have any days that were a complete rest?  My plans are to start out within my limits and then go as much as I feel my body can take it.  But I'd love to be able to get up a 100 mile daily ride.

What kind of pacing do you folks use on your long rides?  I realize everyone is different.  On my weekend rides I never am on the bike more than 2 hours without a 15-30 minutes rest.

General Discussion / Re: First long distance ride?

I too am considering my first long distance ride this spring going from Orlando to upstate NY, and have also considered bringing my weapon for protection.  I do have a concealed weapons permit as well.  The biggest concern with doing this is travelling through a state that does not reciprocate, meaning I could be committing a felony just by possessing the weapon.  Some states that do not reciprocate do allow a traveller to pass through with their weapon but have strict requirements on how to carry it (must be unloaded, in an approved locking mechanism, etc etc).  And some states do not allow this at all.

I would not recommend carrying one for protection against grizzly bears.  Unless you're carrying something high caliber, you'll just piss him off.

I decided against carrying my weapon, too many different state requirements.  My protection will be using common sense.  If you do decide to carry your weapon, make sure you know each state's laws.

General Discussion / Re: Long distance trip alone?
« on: January 31, 2012, 09:43:42 am »
My thanks to all who have responded and given me their words of wisdom.  I'm really leaning towards doing this, probably start in the April time frame due to weather.  My reasons for being unsure about riding alone is really a safety issue, not from the stand point of getting hit by a car but more from meeting up with a "not so nice" person.  I expect to use motels almost exclusively as well as have a smart phone with me.

And a special thanks to golferdevo3 for the blog on their trip, very informative reading.

General Discussion / Long distance trip alone?

I'm considering a long distance trip this summer, biking from Orlando to upstate NY.  I don't have any riding partners so I'd be taking this alone.  Am I crazy and stupid?  LOL, but seriously I'd like to here from anyone else who has done a cycling trip alone and hear their experiences and words of wisdom.

General Discussion / Orlando to upstate NY

I'm considering a trip this spring biking from Orlando Florida to upstate NY, specifically just west of the Elmira / Corning area, and was wondering if there was any interest in joining me.
