« on: February 21, 2013, 07:09:52 am »
The following link is to the new BikeWalkLee updated county map for those using the ACA's Florida Connector Map for the Fort Myers, FL (Lee County) area.

Map number 2 was from 2006 and this updates that.

As you, I attempted to use a carbon frame Trek 2100 on my entry into touring. It did not work. I was looking at self-contained and found my Trek was just too light for the job. I have since gotten a Surly Disk Trucker and found this to be a wonderful bike to tour on.

The touring bike is a more relaxed ride and geared more for touring with weight. I could not have been more pleased to go this route.

FYI That time frame is the high season here in Florida, you might want to check if camping sites are available on your route as the snowbirds are here.

And have you considered doing the "Florida Connector" route from Ft. Myers to Key West?

Routes / Re: Emergencies on paved rail-trails??

I recently retired from a local fire department in South Fort Myers, FL. We covered a popular biking trail, John Yarbrough Linear Park, as Rails-to-Trails, have limited vehicle access. We have in the past pre-planned each section of the park for emergency vehicle access points and path obstructions, ie pedestrian bridges only.

Each section has been designated by intersecting roadways that allows us to place the caller’s location for emergency access points as per our response plan for that section of the park.

Georgia State DOT has a great bicycle road map for the state here:

This gives you information on a route out of Atlanta to the South to connect with the ACA's Atlantic route.
