Urban Cycling / why bike?

Boone:
You sound very angry.  Turn off your tv for a few months.  And for goodness sake, at least block Fox channels. You will feel much better about yourself, about riding, and have less animosity toward your neighbors.

I can tell your really a good liberal deep down.  Embrace those hippys. The will show you the way.

Urban Cycling / why bike?

I'm up your way every Thanksgiving. If your consider Portland as being your way.  I spent my summers working at a camp in Winslow in my college days.

During our annual Thanksgiving shopping excursion, I bring my bike.  Wifey shops, I ride. When it's time to eat or sleep, I come back. Just like my dogs do at home.  

Having a hobby that helps people make it that much more fun, doesn't it?

No reason for riding bikes that are any different from playing sports or going out to dinner.  I enjoy it.

Urban Cycling / Urban Touring

I have a couple of regular one and two day tour choices just off, and on, Cape Cod. One is riding across the Bourne Bridge to "The Cape" There are plenty of paved trail miles, and the roads are bike friendly, if that's your preference. There are many available places to stay. From five star accomodations to commando camping, and everything in between.

Once on the cape side of the bridge, there are so many riding choices.  Hug Buzzards Bay to Woods Hole and Falmouth, or head north toward Wellfleet and Provincetown. Another good choice is to hang around Dennis and the Yarmouth area.

 An alternative to crossing the Bridges is a great ride to the Plymouth area. Plymouth is very close the  Myles Standish State Forrest, which has miles of roads and a half dozen ponds that are open to camping at a reasonable rate.  (If you choose to check in. Budget cuts, if you know what I'm insinuating ).  

I very often have the roads to myself riding from New Bedford, Ma. to Buzzards Bay (Bourne Bridge) and/or to Carver (Myles Standish). Naturally once you get to the touristy areas, a rider has to share.

Two of us rode the Erie Canal this summer. Except for one night, the locals directed us to places where people camp on public property.  The short 6 day ride is posted on my crazyguyonabike.com journal, and tells how we found our campsites.

You don't have to do the whole thing. Worrying about finishing will take too much away from the experience. Set your start and end date (if you need to get back to schoo),  and finish the rest another time.

Read the book "Hey Mom, Can I ride my bike Across America".  There are some really good descriptions of getting through bad weather.  

A very fun book to read.

General Discussion / Cross Country bike documentary

I purchased a copy of the documentary and found it very entertaining. The  music, especially the cello, was a nice touch.I have two questions.

1. Is the music available on a cd

2. A couple of comments in the 2005 summer ride with the NC group gave the impression there may be a documentary about that trip. Yes?

I had company from Toronto this past weekend and showed the movie.  The reviews were all great. If there is another, I am a definite customer.

$25 is not "that" bad. Everyone should keep in perspective that we are not dealing with a major distributor who can mass market its' product.
