G'day rolpin,

I cycled most of the ST last year, albeit in the opposite direction to your planned ride.

I was mainly staying in motels and had little problem in finding accommodations, with only a couple of exceptions. From your post, I don't know what your preference is with regards to motels or camping.

I personally, would recommend sticking with the ACA route out of Van Horn through to Fort Davis. It is a challenging ride, especially riding W to E, and there are no services available at Kent, however the country side is spectacular.

There is a cyclist's only hostel at Marathon, and information is available at the pizza place on the main street. There isn't much available between Sanderson and Comstock. I couldn't find any store open in Dryden when I passed through. You will need to time your arrival at Langtry if you are relying on stocking up with provisions. The only store is on US90 which wiil be on your right hand side, before you head down into Langtry. There is nothing in the town iteslf, other than the Judge Roy Bean museum. It has clean rest rooms and wi-fi. You can pitch a tent alongside the community centre hall, but there are no amenities, other than a water hose. There is a donation box where you can drop in a couple of dollars. There is also a trailer where cyclists can stay, but I never saw the owner, and I am not really sure of the protocol.

Comstock is very small but does have a motel. I didn't stay in Comstock.

Road 334 out of Bracketville (ACA maps Section 4, maps 52 & 53) has a rough surface, but the surface improves once you turn onto Road 55. There are no services between Bracketvill and Camp Wood, so you will have the best part of 50 miles without services. The hills around Leakey and Vanderpool are challenging.

Out of Bastrop, the ACA maps take you through Bastrop State Park(ACA maps Section 4 map 61), but these roads were closed when I came through last year, so maybe you might want to check with them beforehand. No big deal and I rode state 71 for this section.

There is no shoulder on State Rd 150 between New Waverly and Coldspring (ACA maps Section 5 map 67) and there was lots of traffic when I rode that section. It was early morning out of Coldspring so it might have been early morning commuters.

There is no shoulder on Country Rd 363 between Kirbyville and Bon Weir (ACA maps Section 5 map 71) and this road is used by trucks.

If you have ridden SF to SLC solo, this section of the ST shouldn't cause you any concerns.

It really is a lovely ride and I hope you enjoy it.

Regards

I cycled most of the ST last year E-W, but started mid-March. I encountered very little headwind riding this direction during that time frame, and I also had good weather along the way. Starting in Florida was also a good way of getting miles into my legs on relatively flat terrain, and building up endurance before the tougher hillier sections.

I kept a journal on CGOAB.

And here is another link to a CGOAB journal of a W-E rider who I met up with in Alabama. This particular rider started out on 1st March 2012.

Whichever way you ride, I know you will love it. It is spectacular country.

Good luck.

Here is a link to a fairly authoritive journal on Crazy Guy.

It does describe a particular route, but has a conclusion page with much useful information.

Routes / Re: Newbie Advice / Western Express

G'day Scott,

I recently rode the Western Express (Cedar City to San Francisco).

I wasn't carrying a cell phone so can't advise about cell service.

The shoulders on US50 are variable and many sections have rumble strips, although there are some sections that don't. The worst sections are the sections from the Lahontan Reservoir to Fallon (approx 20 miles) and then from Fallon to Sand Mountain (approx 20 miles). The shoulders on both these sections are all but unridable, and there was a large volume of heavy traffic along this section (between Sand Mountain and Fallon) when I rode it. Try to avoid the Fallon to Sand Mountain section on week-ends or public holidays.

Elsewhere, it is possible to ride to the inside of the rumble strips, along those sections which do have them. You will find a lovely, long flat section of newly surfaced road on the way into Eureka.

The grades of the climbs are not overly difficult, however, the wind is the greater factor.

In the main, I found the traffic along US50 to be very courteous and gave me as much room as possible.

I see that you have made reservations for your accommodation, which is a good idea. Motel accommodation can be a bit tricky otherwise.

It is magnificent country to ride through. Very challenging but equally very rewarding.

Hope this helps. Have a great ride.

Routes / Re: Need Route and info from Georgia to San Diego

G'day John,

It was possible to ride to the outside of the rumble strips, however the shoulder had rough cracks, (or expansion seams) across it every ten feet or so. These cracks were raised and very rough to ride. Additionally, there was shrubbery growing right alongside the guardrail, and often the branches from the shrubbery were blocking the shoulder, so I either had to swerve out into the traffic lane (crossing the rumble strips) or simply allow the branches to brush against my arm. There was also a large amount of rocks and debris on the shoulder, and finally, the traffic volume was fairly large, making it dangerous to ride out in the traffic lane for much of the time.

This was the situation from Bylas to Peridot, on route 70, and after Peridot the shoulder was good. From Globe to Bylas, much of the shoulder had those expansion seams which made for an annoying ker-plunk, ker-plunk as I rode over them, but this section was nowhere near as bad as the section from Bylas to Peridot.

I don't know what the condition of the San Carlos alternate is like, but if I were rdiing this section again, I would take the alternative and not route 70.

Hope this helps and that you have a great ride.

G'day dwboca.

I've only just caught up with this thread and associated it with your "departure date" thread.

The Queen Creek tunnel between Globe AZ and Superior AZ is not too bad, but you will hit the entrance at pace. I found that as I entered it at pace, I quickly realised that I couldn't see the edge of the road, so I veered out as far left as I dared. It is not particularly long and you will pass through it fairly quickly. It is better to be descending than climbing through this tunnel.

Route 70 out of Bylas AZ has a particularly poor shoulder. ACA maps do have an alternate route (San Carlos alternate). They advise that this alternate has poor surfaces, but very little traffic. It is 17 miles longer than the main route. If I were riding this section again, I would ride the alternate route, even though I don't know what the road is like. That's how bad I thought the shoulder on route 70 was.

Routes / Re: Southern Route: Start in March, April, or May?
« on: August 15, 2012, 02:50:35 pm »
I rode the ST section from St. Augustine to Phoenix this year. I started on 18th March and was in Phoenix by 5th May. I had nice cool early mornings throughout Florida;Alabama,Mississippi & Louisiana and was always off the road by about mid-day, when it started to get hot.

Texas;New Mexico; and Arizona were warming up, but once again I was nearly always off the road before it got too hot.

Wind conditions were favourable.

Your planned timetable, of last week in March to first week of April, shoud be good, but I wouldn't advise leaving it any later than that.

Enjoy the ride. It is spectacular.

Routes / Re: Credit Card Touring the Western Express

Pete,

I have just returned from a C to C tour which included part of the Western Express (riding east to west).

As Ben posts, motel/hotel accommodation in Eureka and Austin was a bit scarce. The motel I stayed at in Eureka, filled up prety quickly & I was lucky to get the last available room in Austin, where I got snowed in (late May). I had to camp at Cold Springs Station, although I might have been able to get a room at Middlegate Station had I cycled further that day, but then perhpas not.

Baker is only a small place, with a restaurant which is not open every day of the week, and a grocery store that looks like it has come out of  Cold War Europe. Don't rely on stocking up there. The motel where I stayed in Baker seemed to fill up quickly, once they opened for registrations (3.30pm) and the diner that was attached wasn't open that particular night, (no chef). Milford UT, also has limited motel accommodation although the motel you will come across on the western edge of town is a great place to stay, and has a diner attached to it.

US50 between Fallon and sand Mountain was particularly harrowing. I rode it on Memorial Monday, and there was a very large volume of RV traffic coming away from some ATV event at Sand Mountain. I would advise doing some research on the internet about what events have been scheduled for Sand Mountain, and to avoid it on week-ends if at all possible.

As Ben also posted, the grades of the climbs through Nevada are all manageable. It is the wind which is the killer.

Notwithstanding all that, the W.E. experience was stunningly beautiful, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Please feel free to ask me for any further details if you think I can help.

Hope you have a safe and enjoyable ride.

Dennis

Hello Mapman,

I'll be starting from St Augustine and heading west, on 18th March. I'll be riding the ST as far as Tempe Arizona, and then turning north, so our paths should cross somewhere along the way.

Routes / Re: Southern Tier - Oct 2012 Questions about maps and route

There are a couple of journals on CGOAB which might help you, especially as they are currently riding now, in October, which is what you are planning for next year. The first journalist has diverted from the ST route a number of times and it would seem that impassable bridges were the major concern.

Anyway, for what it is worth, here are the links.

There is an excellent journal on GCOAB of a touring cyclist riding the route at the moment. It might offer some insights.
