Routes / Timing for Western Express westbound
« on: February 03, 2017, 01:05:55 pm »
Thinking I might like to do this route this year going westbound Pueblo to Tahoe area. Carson pass probably not a factor as from there I'd more likely head either north along SC route or south down the 395.

I'm really not familiar with Rockies weather as I only have done the TA through that area during July, and was good weather throughout. But I've heard you can have storms pretty much anytime. Also sounded like there were plenty of little passes in Nevada where you could conceivably get snow.

So should a May 15 or June 1 start date generally work out ok, and how much cold weather should I be prepared for? Is mid-June in Nevada/Utah already very hot?

Routes / West from Missoula : TransAm or Lewis & Clark?
« on: July 08, 2014, 01:08:34 pm »
Just came into Missoula on the TransAm since near Pueblo. Originally planned to finish at Eugene, but now toying with idea of taking the L&C route to Portland. Would like to know thoughts of people with experience of both routes as to which they'd prefer. Understand the L&C would have bad headwinds in the Columbia River Gorge and the TransAm would go through some hot sections of Oregon with probably more passes.
Thanks for any input,  will go over to the ACA hq here and pick up those map sections for a better idea - think I have a ways to decide as both routes intersect until near Oregon, I believe.

Routes / Connecting to TransAm from Waynesville/Asheville NC area
« on: April 04, 2013, 10:48:53 am »
Hi all, I'm planning a cross country trip mostly on the TransAM. I'm flying to a brother's house in Waynesville, NC, and from there I'm looking at routes to Damascus, VA. From google maps I see two basic routes:

1) Parallel the 40 to Marion, then take a bit of the Blue Ridge Pkwy and go north more or less on the 421 and 91.
2) Cut northwest from Waynesville, take the 23 to near Johnson City, 91 and then 133.

The second one is 20 miles shorter, elevation gain/loss about equal for both, although the second one seems to have steeper grades.

From what I saw of street-level view didn't look like any shoulder on most of this, although I'm not sure if much traffic or not.

Can anyone give any feedback on a good route to Damascus?, or alternatively another point on TransAm further west.
