Underground Railroad / Launching of the forum

I just read about this and it sounds like so much fun. Perhaps it could include several sub-routes that are more appealing to kids.

Gear Talk / What's your favorite part of a bike?
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:35:28 pm »
I'm no technician. I'm just asking a simple question. What's your favorite bike part? Personally, I like spokes because they cris-cross and look pretty. That's why I like the traditional 36-spoke wheels better than the fancy new wheels with a few flat spokes.

Your favorite bike part can be anything. It can be what you find most useful, most beautiful, or most unique. Just say what it is and why. :P Text

General Discussion / How fast do you ride?
« on: November 07, 2005, 10:00:50 pm »
I just ride to and from school about a mile each way. I have so little time during the school year that I can't do anything more. I averave about 17 k.p.h. due to all the traffic. During the Great Western Bicycle Rally I can easily do at least 40 miles a day. I've never tested the limit, though.

It's a great big gathering over Memorial Day weekend in Paso Robles. It has little contests like huffy toss and tire changing. It also has a website somehwere if you want to know more about it. It's tons of fun because it's more than just a ride, it's a celebration of bicycles. It's over now, but I don't see any reason why we can't continue to talk about it.

Has anybody ever gone? I've gone once and I'm going again this year. Let's talk about it.

That's so sweet. I had dreams about going on a bicycling vacation when I was younger, but my parents never took me on one. Your kid is going to love this. :)

I fantisize :eg: about getting them back, but it's just not practical and I have better things to do, like homework. Thanks for the ideas anyway.

One of my friends helped me out. He told the guys that he got a ticket for running stoplights. He's a very respectable guy, so I bet he made an impact.

Occasionally on my way to school, I run into three kids on BMX bikes who want to race me. I'd beat easily, except that they run stoplights. I keep catching up with them, but when I get to school they always laugh at how they beat me and it seems like they want me to get angry or something. How should I react? :quest:

General Discussion / Bike Freindy Bus and Train Systems in USA?

BART is nice. It's in the San Fransisco Bay Area and they allow bikes anytime the trains aren't crowded, so it's easy to get around on weekends. Even though regular bikes are limited to non-commute hours, folding bikes are always allowed on BART.

General Discussion / Bicycling guild
« on: April 18, 2005, 11:55:11 pm »
Has anyone ever been to neopets? It's kinda a funny website for kids who have nothing better to do. Anyway, I have a "guild" on the site dedicated to bicycling. You can view it at http://www.neopets.com/guilds/guild.phtml?oid=hapwardare All the fancy stuff and graphics were created by my best friend LEGO-Man Pythagoras.

I'd really appreciate it if you folks would join the guild. Even if you aren't active in the guild, it looks better when the guild has lots of members.
1) Join neopets at http://www.neopets.com/refer.phtml?username=hapwardare it's free and they don't send you irritating E-mails!
2) Go to my guild and click the thingy that says join.
3) If you have any problems, neomail me. My username is hapwardare.

If you find the time to do this I really appreciate it. :)

General Discussion / Camping w/o a tent

I've slept under the stars with Girl Scouts, Venture Crew, and in Yosemite. The bugs and animals have never been a problem for me. My guess is that as long as you're in a place with a lot of people, there won't be a pest problem. If you're alone, the animals might be more curious, but I've never been alone, so I don't know. Moisture is very annoying if you don't have the right equipment, but just about any kind of tarp takes care of the problem.

Look, there's danger everywhere. Sometimes people get hurt, and that's life. My parents know someone who got attacked by a drunk motorist. I doubt any pepperspray is going to protect you from that. I say use the pepper spray for dogs, but that's about all you can do. Try outrunning your attackers before resorting to pepper spray if you can, but do use it if you need it.

General Discussion / vegetarians
« on: April 19, 2005, 02:29:49 pm »
You really should be fine as long as you're not at a Girl Scout camp. Girl Scout usually have vegetarian options, but they are limited. My diet is so strict that the last time I went to camp, I lived off of lettuce, tomato, a few other kinds of raw veggies and fruits, and some plain lays potato chips for a whole week. The salad dressing had high fructose corn syrup and everything else had hydrogenated oil, rbst, or other stuff. This year I'm wary of the tomatoes, corn, and lettuce because of genetic modification. Supermarkets always have something edible.
