Routes / Great Rivers Route
« on: July 07, 2006, 07:36:25 pm »
I'm planning to do the Great Rivers Route soon after Labor Day this year. I would like to exchange email with anyone having done this ride or who could offer anything of interest. I have several journals on CGOAB to get an idea of my experience. A few months ago my wife and I spent a day on the Natchez Trace as we were passing through TN just for a taste. The Trace seems mighty fine if the rest of it is as nice as the first part out of Nashville.

Hope this isn't redundant but crazyguyonabike.com is searchable for all the journals of folks who did the southern tier. You can even limit it to west to east or vice versa. e->w 11; w->e 22. Lot of info there.

General Discussion / Green Mountain Tour

Thanks Road Warrior. I'll take that advice including
the country Inn. My wife has a much better time if
we indulge a bit. And so do I.

Thanks for the reply. I wonder about camping,
mosquitos, motels and approximate prices. We
will be self supported with the motel option
planned for about 1 out of 4. We are going to take a
week off after the Bon ton Roulet and then do the
GMT.

My wife and I will be doing the Green Mountain
Tour in Vermont in either early July or early August.
Probably a mix of inns/motels and camping. I've
ordered the map. Any advice will be appreciated.
We have toured but her experience is limited to 1
week last fall. Thanks.

General Discussion / Camping w/o a tent
« on: April 23, 2005, 03:59:29 am »
I rode from Oregon to Illinois last year. I strongly
recommend a tent. You will have a lot of
uncomfortable nights, get wet, be bitten by
mosquitos and have to jump through hoops to
change clothes, get dressed. You will also have
lots of damp or wet gear even when it doesn't rain.
I talked to a guy in Three Sisters, OR who was
walking the Pacific Crest Trail. Some nights he
slept out but was clear that when he needed the
tent it was worth every ounce. And he was carrying
everything on his back. Good luck. See my journal
at srtraveler.crazyguyonabike.com. There are over
400 journals on this site with many TransAm
stories.
