This is helpful. I was considering starting in April, so I will probably have to start from further south. Maybe Southern California.
Thanks for the suggestions. I will keep my eye on the Oregon and Washington DOT road opening announcements.

If one were to bike from Seattle eastward, realistically, what is the earliest start date in the Spring?
I know I have seen someplace on this website about "the first transcontinental visitor" of the year at the ACA headquarters, but I can't seem to find a good barometer for the start date that would be passable considering snow closing roads.

One summer 20 years ago, I was riding north from Carolina to Massachusetts and had 3 great days along Hatteras followed by several grim days through Virginia, when a flat, wind and rain and other annoyances was getting me down.
I was stopped at a 7-11 and a young stoner guy started talking to me about the trip, both the good and bad. He empathized, and then he said something that has stuck with me ever since.
He said, "Yeah dude, I guess if you are going to ride the bike, you gotta ride the bike."
That has been my biking mantra ever since.

I took this ride last year and it is a great ride to do with kids.
I suggest you take both kids in the burley.
My 4 year old really didn't want the responsibility of hanging on to handle bars, pedalling.

I would recommend taking the 3 yr old in a burley trailer, a child seat would be too uncomfortable for the longer days. The trailer will give them space and comfort. Take toys and a favorite blanket and let the child sleep on the road.

Consider the Cabot Trail. The hills will provide you a challenge, but excellent views. Great campsites. A great ride to consider. Lots of uphill.

Youth Bicyle Travel / Natchez Trace with a 10 year old

I am planning a 8 day ride from Nashville, TN to Natchez, Mississippi with my 10 year old. The Trace is a park road and not too isolated. We will travel about 50 miles a day....450 miles total. Apparently there are lots of riders on this road. Does anyone have any thoughts on issues of biking with a child on the Natchez Trace?
