Routes / Fallingwater
« on: February 11, 2007, 06:18:31 am »
I am planning a long weekend ride for 4 - 8 people to see Fallingwater next May and would like advice from anyone who lives nearby or has ridden there. We might start west of Cumberland or south of Pittsburg, ride a couple of days to Fallingwater, spend a half day there, and ride back a different way.

The Allegheny Passage rail-trail looks like a "must do" for part of it. I have the excellent maps and on-line information from the Allegheny Trail Alliance, the Penn DOT bike map, the Maryland bike map, and traffic volume maps of PA and MD. I would like to find rural roads to complement the rail-trail and give some variety for the return route.

These are experienced cyclists; hills are OK while we seek scenery and points of interest. We prefer pavement but can manage unpaved roads with the touring wheels we take for the rail-trail.

This will be a credit card tour. Advice on inns, B&Bs and motels would be most welcome too. Thanks!

Routes / Northern Tier alternate NW of Ticonderoga NY
« on: June 07, 2006, 04:12:07 pm »
Is anyone out there familiar with routes between North Hudson and Paradox? I am looking at Johnson Pond Rd and Letsonville Rd to avoid a nasty bit of US 9 from North Hudson to Severance.

Paul from Ticonderoga, are you still reading here? Anyone else? I rode this in 1994 and remember a beautiful and remote road, some of it unpaved. What condition are these roads in now, please? We may be able to put the Northern Tier through there.

Thank you,

Fred

Routes / Ticonderoga NY: riding north
« on: January 26, 2005, 06:53:09 pm »
Anyone from Ticonderoga, NY not completely frozen up yet? I am planning a route coming across the ferry from Shoreham and going north toward Crown Point.

Have you any recommendation for routes north of town? The Green Mountains Loop takes Shore-Airport Rd, which is not too pleasant. How does 9N/22 compare? Any shoulders there? How about Delano Rd/CR 22B: is it paved?

All tips appreciated!

Fred

A misleading title for a well-written article about riding across, available until January 29, 2006:
