Hi,

My name is Scott and I live in the Twin Cities. I first got into long riding in 2000 when I did my first Heartland AIDS Ride... 6 days and 575 miles. After that I was bitten by the touring bug and have done several multi-day organized rides around the US, but was still hesitant to go unsupported. I finally went out solo last fall, CC touring from SF to Bryce Canyon on the Western Express, 830 miles over 12 days. It was a little scary, in a good way and ended up being very rewarding. Still riding and loving my 2000 Lemonde Tourmalet steel frame.

Pete,

You mentioned this leg was your lowest average speed, do you recall what that number was? Last year I went from SF to Bryce with an overall speed of 9.3 mph (including stops). My toughest day last year was the 13 hours of climbing the Sierra Mountains, getting into Kirkwood just after sunset.

Also, do you recall what time you got into Blanding (aka... what time is sunset in early September in SE Utah)?

Routes / WE Advice - Hanksville to Blanding
« on: August 12, 2013, 05:35:40 am »
Credit Card touring the WE from Bryce UT to Pueblo CO this year. Looking at the AC maps, I'm scratching my head over the ride from Hanksville UT to Blanding UT, and could use some input from those of you who have experienced this area.

Option #1 is that I can do it in a one-day straight shot of 126 miles, but it would be a one-day straight shot of 126 miles... with no services :(

Option #2 is to do two days with an overnight stop at Defiance House in Bullfrog Marina. The downside to this routing is that due to the schedule of the ferry that crosses the Lake Powell, I wouldn't be able to start a century day until 11am, putting me in the dark riding into Blanding.

Thoughts?

I stayed at The Border Inn on my CC tour last year. They are very welcoming and accommodating people. The only thing I would look for is their annual fundraising appreciation event they hold for the area students. I was there during the event last year and found sleep very difficult. I finally had enough and was on the road by 5am. I did speak to the hotel owner from Baker, and found him very polite, didn't slander against bikers at all.

Connecting ACA Routes / Western Express - North Lake Powell Lodging

Hi All,

Planning an early summer 2013 credit card ride on the WE from Bryce to Pueblo. The stretch from Hanksville to Blanding on 95 looks sad on the AC maps. Is there any lodging options at Hite?

Alternately, has anyone taken 276 through Bullfrog Basin floating on the Burr/Hall Ferrey? Any lodging to be had around there?

Ride On,
Scott

Thanks a lot you guys. Myself (and my wife who will be at home) appreciate the info.

I've been looking at packing lists and some suggest animal spray. Do you feel it's necessary on this portion of the WE?

Routes / Newbie Advice / Western Express

Good Morning Riders,

I will be riding the Western Express, SF to Bryce Canyon, starting mid-September. This will also be my first solo/unsupported ride, so I currently have a healthy nervousness about my upcoming adventure. I have opted for hotels each night, for which I have made reservations. I will be averaging 75 miles/day. I've done several rides in the Rockies, so the climbs don't intimidate me too much. I have many questions, but the few that come to mind are:

Is there cell service from Fallon to Cedar City?
What is the shoulder situation on Lonely Highway 50?
Are drivers cordial on Highway 50?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated on the route and general solo touring.

I checked into starting from Astoria last year. I would have done
something similar, fly into Portland. I found there is a seasonal Lewis &
Clark train that runs from Portland to Astoria, through some very
scenic areas. Sounded very cool, and a great addition to the adventure.
I did a Google online for bike shops in Astoria, called one of them, and
they said to ship it to them. They even offered (for a small fee) to
assemble it ahead of time.

My two wheeled friends,

I will be riding in Colorado in a few weeks. I am trying to make a loop
from Estes Park>Grand Lake>Winter Park>Empire>Boulder>Estes. I
have been studying maps and am unsure of the Empire to Boulder leg,
anyone have advice?
