Routes / GAP/CO Canal on a folder ????

Hi planning to bring my small wheel folder over to ride the GAP and CO Canal. Any thoughts on possible problems with the surfaces for a small wheeler?

Routes / Ronald Reagan Airport to C&O Canal route

Hi can anyone give me a good route to get me from RR International Airport to the C&O Canal. I would prefer not to got through central Washington. And if there is a hotel along the way even better as not planning to go far after the flight from UK.

Gear Talk / Ori folding bike - anyone have any knowledge/experience

Hi thinking of buying an Ori bike Mi8 model.
Does anyone have first hand knowledge of these machines and how good are they for touring.
I initially want it to put on the boat but also to use it to fly out and tour.

Has anyone used something like this. I had a regular light weight inflatable which was so narrow I was unable to stay on it at night. However, this one fits inside you sleeping bag - looks interesting

Gear Talk / This is novel use of bike & tent for lightweight tourers

Not too sure how much weight using the bike like this would save. I could not be bothered with anything like this because after a days riding I want my tent up in no time - especially if raining, Just wonder what state the tent would be when wet and muddy.
Anyone used one and can put me right about how good they are?

Just curious but does anyone know
1. when 700c wheel size was first introduced
2. when did manufacturers stop putting the gear changers on the tube from the head tube to the bottom bracket

might be a start in your research. It is a busy tourist route but does have a shoulder and is long and straight much of the way. However, accommodation might be your problem as not allowed to wild camp along the way, the place is a swamp and full of alligators. It depends on what distance you are able to do each day. Most people seem to by-pass this bit using a ferry. My advise would be to ask the question on the forum and you will get more local knowledge. I know more about central Florida. I may well be in Florida - just south of Orlanda when you arrive - let me know your dates and route The ACA connector route passes very close to my house in Celebration. and there are several trails I would recommend. Good luck and have a great trip

General Discussion / Best cycling town/area on Atlantic coast?

Hi Guys I presently have a house in Central Florida but want to move further north so that I can cycle more comfortably in the summer.
Looking for:-
1, No too far from International Airport (I live in UK)
2, Preferably some longish off road trails suitable for easy riding (my wife won't do rough off road)
3, Equatable climate
4, Cycle friendly area
5, No too isolated so that shopping isn't a day long trek
6, Good restaurants
Basically the need to ride & walk will determine where we relocate to.

General Discussion / A question for the more mature on which bike to tour >>>>

Check out my web site http://www.tonystravels.com/ and you'll see I've done several long distant rides using up to date technology. As a collector of vintage bikes I have an idea to combine touring using an oldie. What vintage bike would you recommend? (mine in USA are mainly the fat tyre with fake tanks on - not really suitable for long distance)
Looking for something a bit different but would do the job.
One idea I have is to use a WW2 paratroopers folding bike, which if they would let me at my local parachute club in Florida, and start the ride by jumping with it and then heading off. (It's the one featured in a Discovery Channel recent film and I have here in UK now) There are no gears on it so Florida touring would suit or up the Atlantic Coast and onto C&O Canal. All pretty flat I think.
Look forward to your views even if it's a tour of fancy or in the case of the para bike maybe a flight of fancy

Crossing Australia to highlight Heartburn awareness
On 9 September I will be leaving Perth Au to cycle across Australia to Sydney (or as far as I can in 2 months) this has always been one of my ambitions but also since being diagnosed with Barrett's Disease I want to highlight the dangers of letting heartburn continue too long without getting it checked out. I disguised the symptoms by taking various over the counter well advertised products. So if you have persistent heartburn or acid reflux please get it checked out. General Discussion / How do you train for a long tour?

Heading for a ride across Australia in September and needing to get fit. How am i doing it on a perfect day for cycling in UK?
Sitting on my bike, set up on my turbo trainer, in front of the TV watching the Tour de France. I managed to beat Cav in the intermediate sprint and then take the polka dot jersey in the mountains. The riders do have one advantage on me as they can free wheel down the other side, I still have to pedal!
My wife not too happy with me throwing my empty drink bottles across the lounge. At least I missed her ornaments - unfortunately.
Anyway quite often in my own little world when touring. how about you.

General Discussion / Compact carbs? Do they exist?

OK the plan is Perth to Sydney Australia, August. At times several hundred miles with only the prospect of a Road House doing burger & fries occasionally. What I want to know is in your opinion how is the best way to carry carbs and which manufacturer would you recommend.
I don't plan to carry any cooking gear as I will be loaded down with water and I'm happy (?) to eat cold ie nuts dried fruit etc or any other suggestions.
Please I know a balanced diet etc is the best but on large parts of this trip it just isn't going to happen. I want loads of carbs with the least amount of weight possible.
