General Discussion / Sex drugs n rock and roll
« on: March 05, 2010, 05:49:50 am »
Ha gotcha, actually I need to buy medicine while in the USA as our NHS won't give me/sell me enough to cover the entire trip.

Do I have to register with a Doctor or can I go into a pharmacy and buy medicine I need Losec daily which isn't available over the counter here. How can I do it?

Thanks

Hi leaving Orlando 20 April heading up Atlantic Coast to Richmond Va expect to take max 3 weeks and then picking up TA. Do you think I need to book in advance camping / motels at this time of the year. Are there any major public holidays during this time?

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Cycle lane or another sad joke
« on: March 01, 2010, 09:33:53 am »
Hi take a look at this cycle lane - I dare anyone to use it.  Is this just another example of the authorities putting cyclists in danger just to meet government target for providing cycle lanes.  The link below is to my Facebook log and safe but if you don't want to look basically the lane is on cobble stones, about 12" wide with a drop of about 6' into a canal directly on one side with no barriers.  It has to be someones idea of a joke!

General Discussion / Folding Bikes
« on: February 23, 2010, 12:51:49 pm »
I know not probably something us tourers/serious riders might own up to knowing anything about.

Well I want to buy a couple to keep on my boat as we often moor up quite a long way from any shops etc. And I thought if they folded then they would not take up valuable space.  Does anyone know of reasonable quality bikes they would recommend.

Thanks

Sorry don't know why this turned into a poll  ???

General Discussion / SOME VERY ODD POSTINGS BE AWARE
« on: February 23, 2010, 04:52:41 am »
Maybe I'm getting too suspicious but look out for some new members and what seems ok topics but they have the same advert links one selling steroids.  Apologies if I do anyone a disservice.

Secondly how do you get to report anything weird to the Moderators?

I guess I get to see these before most of you get up as I'm in UK

Gear Talk / Baggy shorts
« on: February 05, 2010, 09:52:28 am »
Having toured previously in lycra.  Now getting a bit older and taking into account the delicate nature of some of the red necks I will encounter on next tour I've decided to move over to "baggies".

Anyone like to suggest/recommend the best makes/model to start my search.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Underground Railway why ...
« on: January 31, 2010, 01:07:41 pm »
Why does the UG on Sect 4 map No43 leave the Ohio to Erie Trail (Prairie Grass Trail - unless I have it wrong) and go via Clifton only to rejoin the trail at South Charleston Oh?  It's not much of a detour but just wondered as Rails to Trails say it is well maintained.

Routes / Need route from Pensilvania to meet up with Atlantic coast
« on: January 12, 2010, 12:06:47 pm »
I know some one will be able to advise.

Heading north on Atlantic Coast ACA route will pick up Trans Am going west, then meet Underground Railway and head north - take the Pennsylvania arm south.

OK can you advise please a) how to get round Pennsylvania & b) a route SE to pick up the Atlantic Coast route north of Washington.  Want to end up in Lancaster.

Many thanks Tony

Routes / Into Boston
« on: January 05, 2010, 11:59:09 am »
Planning to end Atlantic Coast trip or rather return south after the ride from Boston.  Don't really want to cycle into Boston - does anyone know how the best way might be to get to Amtrak there without riding unless there is a good recognised route, thanks

General Discussion / Getting back to where you started
« on: December 01, 2009, 09:12:42 am »
Hi planning a south to north along the Atlantic Coast in the spring.

I hate flying with the bike and have no intention of taking a Greyhound type trip so my question is. (Plus not sure about airports way up north)

Hire a UHaul type van, and go one way - possibly camp in the back.  Quite like this idea...

Hire a suitable sized car one way

Give the bike to one of the shipping companies and fly (have done this before from San Francisco to Florida and worked OK except this time I don't have the visa time to hang around waiting for it to arrive).

Anyone have advise on the best way would be much appreciated.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Maps other than ACA -
« on: October 12, 2009, 11:50:52 am »
Hi here from UK.  I'm a big fan of ACA maps and used them whenever touring, however they are limited to the route and I like to have other maps of the area not only to get an idea where I am in the country but to plot excursions and short cuts etc.

Can anyone let me know who prints the kind of maps that cyclists would find useful and where can I buy them.

(really struggled at time on the ST to find any kind of maps while out on the road)
Thanks Tony

Gear Talk / Info on Trainers please
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:16:34 am »
So as the winter here in UK draws in need to continue to train ready for Florida to Vancouver next spring.

Can anyone give me advice on trainers - have decided against a roller set up.  Looking at a budget trainer as don't need anything fancy - just something to sit on and keep riding fit and break in new Brookes saddle!

Thanks Tony

Routes / SE to NW or NW to SE - ?wind direction
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:34:44 pm »
Trying to find what would be the most favourable way to go between Florida  and Vancouver and not have to battle head winds all the way. Is is heading north or start from Vancouver?

Planning to leave mid April 2010
Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this?  Be very grateful for any pointers.

Thanks Tony

Hi Guys,
heading Orlando to Vancouver, does anyone have an opinion, experience as to which might be the preferred route
Underground - Lewis & Clark - Northern Tier
or
Underground - Trans America - Northern Tier.

And why please.
Thanks
