Routes / Using Google Maps & the cycling routes - Beware!
« on: May 25, 2010, 06:22:37 pm »
I was so excited when Google Maps started giving routes for bicycles and have very successfully plotted routes with them.  However, Last week one of the roads they sent me on didn't exist and I ended up in a private plantation, trespassers to be prosecuted by the Sheriff!! Having gone several miles on a very hot Florida day I was not overly impressed but fortunately, one of the Mexican workers said he could show me a way through the forest on some narrow sandy lanes.  Just about managed to keep up with his buggy but he got me through.  What a hero - shame we beat you at soccer yesterday.

MORE concerning was that the proposed route through Akron Oh would have taken me though a very dangerous area for gangs etc - luckily a local was able to put me right.

I like this development from Google but just wanted to warn others to double check where it sends you.

Routes / Ohio River into Pittsburgh Pa
« on: March 19, 2010, 10:32:28 am »
Hi can anyone tell me which is the most suitable road to take, coming from the Beaver in the north, into Pittsburgh.  There are two roads that follow the Ohio River, Ohio River Blvd & Constitutional Blvd, but looking at Google it's hard to tell which, if either , is bike friendly.

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Amtrak & carry on luggage
« on: March 10, 2010, 09:27:16 am »
Hi does anyone know what the rules are regarding carry on luggage on Amtak.

Planning to bring bike back from Washington, overnight to Orlando.  I know about boxing the bike but can't find out about carry on luggage and how many pieces are allowed.

My idea is to buy a suit case to put all the numerous panniers, tent etc in, is this necessary?

General Discussion / Gatoraid (sp?) v Water
« on: March 09, 2010, 11:47:38 am »
Recently rode with a guy who wouldn't drink anything but Gatoraid (sp?) I always drink water and have never had problems but I just wondered if Gatoraid is
a) any good at all,
b) was he right to just drink Gatoraid and it really did helped him.
c) should it just be used maybe at the end of a ride to replenish lost salts etc.

Tastes like all the other sugary drinks and such unusual colours put me off.

Ha gotcha, actually I need to buy medicine while in the USA as our NHS won't give me/sell me enough to cover the entire trip.

Do I have to register with a Doctor or can I go into a pharmacy and buy medicine I need Losec daily which isn't available over the counter here. How can I do it?

Thanks

General Discussion / Cycle lane or another sad joke
« on: March 01, 2010, 11:33:53 am »
Hi take a look at this cycle lane - I dare anyone to use it.  Is this just another example of the authorities putting cyclists in danger just to meet government target for providing cycle lanes.  The link below is to my Facebook log and safe but if you don't want to look basically the lane is on cobble stones, about 12" wide with a drop of about 6' into a canal directly on one side with no barriers.  It has to be someones idea of a joke!

General Discussion / Folding Bikes
« on: February 23, 2010, 02:51:49 pm »
I know not probably something us tourers/serious riders might own up to knowing anything about.

Well I want to buy a couple to keep on my boat as we often moor up quite a long way from any shops etc. And I thought if they folded then they would not take up valuable space.  Does anyone know of reasonable quality bikes they would recommend.

Thanks

Sorry don't know why this turned into a poll  ???

General Discussion / SOME VERY ODD POSTINGS BE AWARE
« on: February 23, 2010, 06:52:41 am »
Maybe I'm getting too suspicious but look out for some new members and what seems ok topics but they have the same advert links one selling steroids.  Apologies if I do anyone a disservice.

Secondly how do you get to report anything weird to the Moderators?

I guess I get to see these before most of you get up as I'm in UK

Gear Talk / Baggy shorts
« on: February 05, 2010, 11:52:28 am »
Having toured previously in lycra.  Now getting a bit older and taking into account the delicate nature of some of the red necks I will encounter on next tour I've decided to move over to "baggies".

Anyone like to suggest/recommend the best makes/model to start my search.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Underground Railway why ...
« on: January 31, 2010, 03:07:41 pm »
Why does the UG on Sect 4 map No43 leave the Ohio to Erie Trail (Prairie Grass Trail - unless I have it wrong) and go via Clifton only to rejoin the trail at South Charleston Oh?  It's not much of a detour but just wondered as Rails to Trails say it is well maintained.

Routes / Need route from Pensilvania to meet up with Atlantic coast
« on: January 12, 2010, 02:06:47 pm »
I know some one will be able to advise.

Heading north on Atlantic Coast ACA route will pick up Trans Am going west, then meet Underground Railway and head north - take the Pennsylvania arm south.

OK can you advise please a) how to get round Pennsylvania & b) a route SE to pick up the Atlantic Coast route north of Washington.  Want to end up in Lancaster.

Many thanks Tony

Routes / Into Boston
« on: January 05, 2010, 01:59:09 pm »
Planning to end Atlantic Coast trip or rather return south after the ride from Boston.  Don't really want to cycle into Boston - does anyone know how the best way might be to get to Amtrak there without riding unless there is a good recognised route, thanks

Tony
