Gear Talk / Info on Trainers please
« on: September 24, 2009, 06:16:34 am »
So as the winter here in UK draws in need to continue to train ready for Florida to Vancouver next spring.

Can anyone give me advice on trainers - have decided against a roller set up.  Looking at a budget trainer as don't need anything fancy - just something to sit on and keep riding fit and break in new Brookes saddle!

Thanks Tony

Routes / SE to NW or NW to SE - ?wind direction
« on: September 08, 2009, 04:34:44 pm »
Trying to find what would be the most favourable way to go between Florida  and Vancouver and not have to battle head winds all the way. Is is heading north or start from Vancouver?

Planning to leave mid April 2010
Does anyone have any experience/knowledge of this?  Be very grateful for any pointers.

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Motel/hotel discount
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:03:41 pm »
On recent tour I used hotels & motels, had I been a member of AAA I could have got a discount - just wondered if anyone has ideas on how to get discounts as coming from UK and not member of AAA I had to resort to fantasy reasons ie senior (actually thats not not a fantasy) being a member of SOLMOB (Silly old man on a bike) even when I explained what it meant and that I was the only member having made it up I did get some discounts.  One time a receptioonist said it didn't matter as long as I was a member!  and being a veteran but not from a USA conflict - we have plenty of our own.

Seriously does anyone know if we get discounts beinga member of ACA?  If not maybe they could take it up.

Routes / Advice please on best route
« on: July 14, 2009, 01:34:38 pm »
This is an outline plan - would appreciate any comments or better route as still at the start of my planning.
Orlando to Mobile - no probs done this mostly already

Mobile follow "Underground" to "Lewis & Clarke "
Follow this north west to Fort Peck Montana and pick up the "Northern Tier" until I can head north to Vancouver.

Easy eh?  Seriously am open to anything but has to be road, not too keen on off roading.

Thanks Tony

Routes / Vancouver to Florida or the other way?
« on: July 12, 2009, 01:11:35 pm »
Setting off in April 2010 to cross diagonally - for the most help with wind which would be the best direction NW to SE or SE to NW.

Any hints on best routes as plan to loosely follow some of the ACA route maps.

Just finished Southern Tier - awesome.

Thanks Tony

General Discussion / Long distance cycling and supliments
« on: January 27, 2009, 02:57:57 pm »
Any advice on which, if any, supliments you take on long distance riding?  Especially where a good balanced diet might be hard to find. Or maybe something like creatine?

What are yor thoughts? Have to say haven't ever used them before but getting a bit older now.

« on: November 09, 2008, 01:30:00 pm »
Has anyone had any experience of these new type seat, The Spongy Wonder Seat.  I have just bought one and haven't had chance to try it out before setting off on the Southern Tier. I know, I should know better and this is probably the worst bit of prep anyone could do.  That is why I am now panicing as to whether to go with it or not?

Planning to use the NCT Rails to Trails from Chiefland to Cross City.  Does anyone know if the trail extends from Cross City to Hanes and on to Clara on the 51? It looks like it goes that far on GE but is it ridable on touring bike?
Thanks

General Discussion / Presents for cyclist at Christmas???Not an ad
« on: December 12, 2008, 07:07:36 am »
So as a cyclist what will your nearest & dearest buy you.  My partner has got me Butt Cream - who said romance is dead?  Let us all know what odd things people have bought you "thinking this is just what a cyclist needs" I even got talc powder years ago from my Gran, to put inside the inner tube. Apparently stops air bleeding through the tube!!! :confuse:

General Discussion / What is the daftest thing you ever carried?
« on: November 24, 2008, 12:17:28 pm »
Just for fun come on own up as to what is the "stupidest", "most inapproprite" or "over weight" thing you have ever taken on a long distance cycle tour?
Mine a large bag of Jordons Muselia while touring India, and a Punch and Judy puppet show around SE Asia and China, great for breaking the ice though. ;)
