The UG Spur will add a number of miles. My thought, and people around here(NE Ohio) do it. There go NW from Pittsburg toward Canton , Ohio and then you can pick up the Ohio to Erie Trail. This will take you right into Cleveland where you can pick up the Northern Tier.

How about the C&O & GAP from DC to Pittsburgh. Work your way up toward Cleveland then pick up the ACA Northern Tier.

we took our tandem, a Co-Motion with S&S couplings, to Europe last year. I was able to get the front and rear rack in the cases with the bike. I did make 2 cases, 10"x26"x26".

Routes / Re: Erie Canal Bike Trail - Stone Dust trails
« on: February 13, 2014, 06:19:11 pm »
My wife and I rode it last October from Albany back to NE Ohio. It was a shake down ride on the Long Haul Trucker's I had built up. The surface was mostly packed gravel, though in a few areas the gravel/stone dust was quite fresh and was not yet packed down. We have 26"x 2" tires and even they were abit squirrely at times. We have ridden the GAP & C&O with our hybrids with 32mm tires and that was fine. So I guess it depends on the condition of the trail in different areas. We did jump off and ride the road quite often just to mix it up and to see something different.

We put  Schwalbe Marathon Supremes on our Co-Motion this Summer and toured for the month of July in Denmark. We were on ALL kinds of surfaces and were very pleased.

I was wondering if the maps/route for this tour would be available for someone who would like to do it on their own?

Routes / Missoula to Glacier?
« on: November 28, 2013, 07:41:30 am »
Next year my wife and I will be riding cross country from east to west. we will be starting in Delaware and working our way to St. Louis where we will pick up the Lewis and Clark Route. As I am looking over the maps I see when we get to Missoula we could do a possible detour up to Glacier NP.
So is this something to consider? As it would only be for a few days does it make sense?
Thanks!

Tony,
I am not a local but I have ridden the GAP & C&O a few times. In fact I am leaving via train tonight to arrive in Pittsburgh tomorrow AM to ride sole down to DC. Did it last year also. A great ride!
I might suggest getting a hold of the TrailBook. Here is the link http://www.atatrail.org/index.cfm

Lots of good info.

Hey Day Tripper,
I use 700 x 32mm. I feel pretty comfortable with these. I bought some Continental Travel Contacts.

We lie in NE Ohio. The last time I rode the GAG & C&O was the end of October 2012. I took the train to Pittsburg and rode to DC then took the train back to Cleveland. I would recommend buying the guide book as it contains a wealth of info. Here is a link http://www.atatrail.org/

I have ridden the GAP & C&O 3x. Two times with my wife. We ride Giant Escape Hybrids. I usually change the tires out for a bit more aggressive tread as the C&O can get muddy. The Giant Escape is a great bike! I now work PT at a local bike shop and sell quite a few of them and everyone loves them. They use them as commuters and longer distance rides.

We, my wife and I, like to have 1 pot meals. But we lack creativity! Usually pasta, tuna, diced tomato, and maybe cheese. It is good but would like some variety.
Ideas welcomed!!

GPS Discussion / Re: best way to get use a Garmin 800 for cc trip
« on: December 26, 2012, 05:34:49 pm »
My wife and I ride a tandem and she is the navigator and has the 800. We have been using RideWithGPS. After we map out our route we down load it to a TCX file then into our 800. It works quite well and the TCX gives us a cue sheet.
