Day 1- Amtrak to salinas and then bus to Monterey.  Day 2- Monterey to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park.  Day 3- Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park to San Simeon State Park.  Day 4- San Simeon State Park to Oceano County Park...this is a long day! Day 5- Oceano to River Park in Lompoc...another fairly long day.  Day 6- River Park to downtown Santa Barbara...another fairly long day. 

My book, "Bicycling and Touring the Big Sur Coast" on Amazon.com, gives details of the ride between Monterey and San Simeon, in case you're interested. In case your wife is exhausted, you can always ride from San Simeon to the train station in San Luis Obispo and take the train down to Santa Barbara.

Thanks for the suggestion Paolo!  By the way, the 2nd edition (volume 2) of "Bicycing and Touring the Big Sur Coast" is now available on amazon.com.  I requested that Amazon provide a kindle edition for this book per suggestions from a few people. 

For those of you who plan to ride through Big Sur, you're in for a real treat!

Alas!  After a few revisions and a new map, "Bicycling and Touring the Big Sur Coast" is now available on Amazon.com for those of you who plan to bike or hike through Big Sur.

Carmel, 17 mile drive, and the bike path through Monterey are wonderful rides.  I was planning to ride through Big Sur up to this area again but the storm stopped me in San Simeon.  We are all very fortunate to have such a beautiful stretch of coast to visit and enjoy.

In extreme cases, I've heard of people using plastic bags inside the tent.  Make sure you have a bag with no holes!

I don't know if this response helps any but I'd like to see craigslist create a category entitled "Bikeshare" (the bike counterpart to "rideshare") so cyclists going the same route can connect.  I submitted my suggestion to craigslist but got ignored...

Good Morning!

After riding through Big Sur on Highway 1 at least a dozen times over the past year and a half, I decided to collect details about this special region and write a book.   If you want to know the elevations at each mile post and at the top of the big climbs; information about bike and hike camping, restaurants, lodging, stores, state parks, attractions and local history; and the locations of trailheads, drinking water, and restrooms, this may be the book for you.  The book, "Bicycling and Touring the Big Sur Coast",  is currently available on Amazon.com.
