General Discussion / Re: Maiden Voyage...here I come :)

Well, you know all that flooding out in CO? While I was not in the middle of it, I was close enough. I elected to do some day rides, lots of hiking and micro-brewery research during the brief periods of clear skies. Not to be deterred, I plan on riding the Katy Trail in MO this Fall. Thanks for the good wishes anyway.

Well, after months of reading, settling on a bike, gearing up and putting in some miles, I get to join the ranks of the rest of you. This Monday, I'll be setting off on my first tour. I'm fairly giddy with excitement. After years of hiking, road biking and kayaking, I've taken off down a new road. Let the adventure begin.  ;D

Thanks and mmounties, I completely relate.
There is something about solitude and a bicycle.  :)

I live in Fayetteville, AR which is in the NW corner of the state and a good distance away. I'm sure the needs of the cyclists have been met, but; would gladly offer what help I could should anyone hear of anything.

General Discussion / I wonder why...........

I wonder why you solo touring cyclists are pulled to pedal miles and miles, keeping company with no one but the wind and the sun. I was pondering this over the July 4th holiday as I saw packs and packs of road cyclists out, all headed in one direction on their fast, lightweight bikes. I pedaled steadily the opposite direction, panniers loaded with jugs of water to simulate the weight of a fully loaded bike.  They flew by me and gave a quick nod before re-focusing on the tire in front of them. I noted the wildflowers seemed particularly abundant this year.  :)
What makes it work for you, I wonder..........

Excellent Advice, all.
I will be test riding both this weekend.
This has been a fantastic website for a beginner such as myself.
Thank you all very much.
Should you ever be peddling thru NW ARK, shoot me an email. I have hot water and cold beer!
Cheers.

Gear Talk / Well, here we go..my first touring bike is........?

Yes, I'm coming over to the lighter side. I want to enjoy the world as I pedal thru it these days. I come from a road/mountain biking background. Touring bikes are a different breed..and I am on the horns of deliema. One local bike shop strongly recommends the Salsa Vaya while the other advocates the LHT. Both of the guys to whom I've been quizzing have done respectable tours. Both built their bikes frame up. This will be my FIRST touring bike. I'm very excited BUT being just a tad OCD, am concerned about making the best, logical decision I can. I welcome any and all suggestions.
Some background info: 50 yo female, 5'4", good shape, minor low back issues, budget is enough to allow for a decent bike but not more than I need as a beginner.
I would hope to use this bike on some unpaved back roads and such.
Thanks ya'll. This is a "must do" on my bucket list. I'd like to be rolling come Spring.
Best Regards,
Tammy
