General Discussion / Re: Making the Commitment

+1 What John said,

Last year I got an expensive course through my work which meant a 2 year binding contract, most people hate these things, I thought great I have 2 years to plan an awesome trip.

A couple of months later I asked my girlfriend what she thought if I wanted to go for a 2 year trip, she said, "I wont wait for you, but live your dream"...after many discussions the bottom line was "if you love someone, set them free".

After many plans, nightmares, waking up in cold sweats, the rest is history as they say...

Do you really want another 3kg on your bum? Saddle pain can be an issue at the best of times, without the extra weight...

And whats the biggest advantage of a camelback? It means you can drink without stopping (which you can do with bidons), but why the hurry, its nice to stop for 30 seconds now and again and have a look around, maybe take a photo?

I think you'd have a better chance of getting funds if you did $5 instead of 25, most people will give $5 for a great idea(no comment on wether your idea is great or not ;)) but $25 seems alot.

For tips just browse the forum or ask specific questions on the forum

or look at my site  ;)

Good luck and have fun.

Just another couple of months and my biggest trip to date starts.

Leg 1: Flight from Amsterdam to Cape town(+/- 12 hours).
Leg 2: Cycle back to Amsterdam (12-18 months).

The route: Zigzag a little through the Southern African countries, hang a left at or just after DR congo then keep the Atlantic on the left until Morocco, take a boat, then its just the 2000 mile sprint to the end.

Should you have tips, contacts, idea's or just want to send me your life savings as sponsorship visit my site www.shanecycles.com

Thanks, and enjoy the read!

Luxury at its best....

Untill a few years ago I had the same issues with taking a no2, Wild camping was out of the question because I need to do it with 15 minutes of waking up.

But like all things you get used to it and life becomes alot more simple. And now in many places I visit I'd rather take a shit in the woods than at the public "convenience".

I have one of those "chair kits"for my inflatable mat(insertnamehere), for the extra 1-1.5 pound its well worth it, the main disadvantage is that it doesn't really work for breaks, only at camp. When I stop for a break I use one of my front panniers as a seat (its full of cloths) against a tree or fence post when possible.
