Canada / Prince Edward Island Information needed.
« on: November 21, 2011, 04:52:23 pm »
We are trying to arrange a bike ride, but not camping, on Prince Edward Island. I was hoping to bike one way and get a shuttle or public transportation back. Is there anything like that in PEI? I know there is a trail to ride, but I am having trouble pinpointing places to stay near the bike path. Any ideas or places I can get a suggested route with places to stay?

My favorite organized rides are:
the Horrible Hundred in Clermont, FL...sorry, just last weekend (Nov).  Very well organized, over 2,000 riders and the worst intersections have police letting you safely through, beautiful area and wicked steep hills, though brief.  They always have the best t-shirts...colorful and cute...and it finishes with a lunch that includes salmon or some other really great fish well done as well as the usual burgers and brats.
Mt Dora Bicycle Festival, Mt Dora, FL ....Oct  Pretty area with lots of lakes and hills, antique shops, beautiful terrain, and a folk music festival the same weekend in a nearby town.
Tour of Sebring Bicycle Event, starts and finishes at Kenilworth Lodge, Sebring, FL   Stay in an old grand hotel from about 1915, fun events like ice cream social, DJ night, and really nice riding.

General Discussion / Re: Florida Keys: Safe to ride?
« on: November 17, 2009, 08:36:20 pm »
I live in Florida and there is SIGNIFICANT biking now in Florida.  The state is behind in bike lanes, etc, but attitudes are not the same.  The main problem you will have is getting enough distance with safe roads to really travel.  Many have little or no shoulder or cars that go by very fast...and then the congestion.  The center of the state is wonderful for biking.  There are even hills north of Orlando.  The Keys just have too much traffic in season for my taste.  Those state campgrounds are reserved and book very early.   Check them out http://www.floridastateparks.org/images/Default.cfm?Region=Southeast.

Routes / Re: Which Direction TransAm Best -E to W or W to E?

Thanks staehpj1 and John.  Great information.  The prevailing winds chart is particularly helpful and great points I hadn't even thought of like the sun being in the driver's eyes.  John, you mentioned that you get the worst hills over earlier.  I'm assuming you mean that the eastern hills and mountains have steeper inclines, because they sure aren't as high as the western mountains, correct?

Routes / Which Direction TransAm Best -E to W or W to E?

We are doing the TransAm this year, but have gone back and forth as to the problem of freezing weather in the West to headwinds if going E to W.  We can vary our start date and we are going to see sights as we go...so we will not be setting any speed records.  What are the pros and cons of each direction?  East to West or West to East?

Great suggestions.  Rocky Mountain National Park is indeed not that far off route and Adventure Cycle is a must.  The rafting in Idaho...what river out of what town?  Also, was it a one day raft trip?  Thank you again everyone for suggestions.  I'm almost ready to hop on my bike a year early!  Alice

Routes / Great things to do on TransAm trail
« on: June 11, 2009, 06:34:00 pm »
We are biking the TransAmerican trail in 2010 from first of June to ? going from Oregon to VA.  We want to also enjoy the country on the way and can take 3-4 months to do the distance.  There are 4 of us, and two are going to switch off driving a small RV, so we can go slightly off route for side trips.  I'm looking for things that some of you who have done this route either did or wish they did that we can add to our plans.  A raft trip?  Great side trips in Yellowstone?  Particularly great hikes?  Unusual places to eat, visit or see?  What were some of your best memories?  Thanks!
