Classifieds / Re: WANTED: waterproof handlebar bag
« on: May 10, 2011, 10:07:35 pm »
I have this bag in pretty much mint condition. i will sell it for $35 shipped. it is very water resistant (nothing is really 100% waterproof).

http://www.rei.com/product/806741/avenir-excursion-20-qr-bike-handlebar-bag-2010-special-buy

for camera equipment, no matter what the bag is made of, if its not hard plastic with a gasket, i would make sure the camera is in a stuff sack made of water resistant material too.

I got these last summer, and barely used them. this summer it seems that they don't fit my feet as well as they did last summer when i bought them, so i would like to sell them since im just going to go with my pearl izumi x-alps. these shoes are great for commuting. the cleats are recessed enough that i almost never hear them click while im walking around.

they were originally yellow and black, but i thought the yellow looked tacky, so i blacked out the uppers as much as possible. i think they look much better this way.

i would like $60 shipped for them ($70 if you would like the used crankbrother cleats to come with them)

pictures are here:

I have a set of crank brother candy 2 pedals that i would like to sell. they have only been on 2-3 short rides, and are in like new condition. they are the silver and black versions seen here.

i can send the cleats that came with them too, which have some signs of use from those couple rides but are in excellent condition.

I would like $60/OBO for them shipped.

Gear Talk / Re: Comparing Kona Sutra and the Surly LHT
« on: May 06, 2010, 05:18:19 pm »
there is a significant reduction in shearing forces when using rim brakes instead of disk brakes. that's why Buell (RIP) created rim mount brakes for their motorcycles, enabling them to cut a significant amount of weight off their wheels.

However, that is for a significantly heavier motorcycle that has to deal with MUCH higher speeds. i really doubt you'll see any yielding of quality spokes from the shearing effect due to having disk brakes instead of rim brakes.

I think for the money, you get a more complete package with the kona.

Gear Talk / I need lower gears!

so, ive been training for a tour and im handling the distances well (50-60 mile training rides) but i can't seem to tackle this one hilly area near my place that has 8-10% grades (maybe even steeper). i have a 80's centurion Lemans with a triple front (48,38,32) and a 6-speed rear (14-28). i think if i could get a larger rear gearing or a small front chainring so i could get a 1:1 ratio maybe even a 28 on the front and a 30 on the back, i think i would be fine.

Does anyone know where i could get these from, or am i asking for something that doesn't exist?

I guess it would make sense to make the big climbs on pavement. thanks for pointing that out, i didn't think about that.

so, i ended up getting the map. however, it looks like the route would be much more enjoyable if the route was reversed. the climbs would be spread out more...

Is there any way to get reverse route directions?

a very good website for planning camping along a road trip is http://www.publiclands.org/home.php

Its an interactive website that has "zoomable" maps of the western states, and on those maps are scenic byways, camp sites (mostly US forest service or BLM sites, some of which are free), and other useful things. i always look cross check this website with my route to find out where i should camp or if there are any cool places to stop or drive though along the way.

so, they aren't the cheapest, but tarptents are very easy to set up and MUCH lighter. if you need a three person tent, look at their rain shadow 2 tent. i have their cloudburst 2 tent, which is a two person tent, and it only takes 5 minutes to set up by myself.

they are waterproof and bug-proof when you zip up the door. its also only weights 2.5 lbs, instead of the 10 lbs the one on amazon weighs. also, that amazon one doesn't look like a tent i would want to be in if its starts raining hard.

if its too pricey for you, look for a used one on the backpackinglight forums
