Gear Talk / Re: Recommended Long-Sleeve Touring Shirts?

My last year (2012) bicycle trip from Illinois to Washington State I bought these "fishing shirts" from Gander Mountain. Big pockets in front for camera and wallet and other stuff. For me these worked great even through Kansas with 100 degree plus temps.

I use a Nexus tablet with GPS and WiFi. Maps With Me is a great app that works with GPS only.

International / Re: Help! I want to go to Europe.
« on: June 10, 2013, 05:18:54 pm »
I dipped my toes in Europe and I'm ready to go back!! For the flight over I got a box from LBS near O'Hare. That was after checking with the airline if they had bike boxes. Earlier in the month I had checked their web site and called customer service and was told they had boxes. The people at the airport when I asked told me they have not had boxes here in years.

My brother and I disassembled the bike and stuffed it into the cardboard box that we got from the LBS.

I’ll save the longer version for some blog but everything went fine and as I said I’m ready to go back and plunge in.

Thanks to everyone that replied

If you are camping along the way here are some of the campgrounds that I used last year heading to Katy Trail and beyond.
Sangchris SP - Beaver Dam SP - Pere Maquette SP - Klondike Park - Tebbetts - Katy Round House.
Good trail to ride and met a lot of nice people.
Have a great time!!

Pick-up some Illinois Official Bicycle Maps. I use them all the time. If you can't find them PM me and I'll mail you the central Illinois maps to you.

International / Help! I want to go to Europe.
« on: March 12, 2013, 04:46:18 pm »
I’m hoping to tour in Europe, first trip, this spring using my LHT with front and rear racks and fenders, gear for camping, and flying from Chicago to Dublin. I have routes planned and I'm ready to go.

However, I just got off the phone with Aer Lingus and I was told the W+L+H be no more than 63 inches. That seems awful small.  No exceptions for the bike.

Is this trip possible with my bike and gear and flying or should I take a slow boat, buy, rent? Need some advice and any information?

Thanks for any help.  :-\

Question on the Tardis bag. Will the bike fit in the Tardis bag with bike racks still attached?

Routes / Re: Linking TransAm (W>E) to Katy Trail back to TransAm
« on: August 29, 2012, 09:34:22 pm »
This was my route I did this June E to W. I would not do that route again. Truck traffic was heavy.  I would head the shortest and safest way to the TA route.

Clinton, MO. West end of Katy Trail to Harrisonville, MO.
Harrisonville, MO. to Pomaro State Park
Pomaro State Park to Santa Fe Trail Campground Council Grove, KS.
Council Grove, KS. to Herrington, Ks
Herrington, KS to Hillboro Cove Campground Marion, KS.
Marion, KS to McPherson, KS
McPherson, KS to Great Bend, KS.

Kay Trail was a good route.

Illinois have bicycle maps that would be helpful. If you want, contact me privately and I can send you some maps.

I’m kind of new to bicycle touring and I take to many cloths? How much and what type of cloths do other cyclist take?
I am leaving June from Illinois to the Portland - Seattle areas using the Katy Trail, connector route, TA, L&C, and PC route.

Thanks

Routes / Re: Suitability mapping?

I’ve used Illinois Official Bicycle Maps a lot. There are nine maps that cover the state. They cover every road, however some of the road names are labeled wrong or not up to date after the county has gone through and changed the rural reference system names to street names. The maps also indicate if the roads or gravel or not.
