Hi,

Does anyone know why the Northern Tier route is drastically changed in North Dakota?

Yes. Start with the topic five down the list from yours, titled "Status of detour around Williston ND area?." Links in some of the posts give more.

Thanks for your reply. The link was very informative. I did the Northern Tier in 2000 and very clearly remember ND 1804. A place where you really experience the bad lands.

1999 for me. I loved the long, quiet days on the plains. Some might get bored, I suppose. I think the railroad guys on the High Line were bored. They would wave and toot whenever I waved.

Hi Lucas,

Does anyone know why the Northern Tier route is drastically changed in North Dakota?

My blog post of several weeks ago spells it:

http://blog.adventurecycling.org/2012/02/big-route-changes-in-north-dakota.html

Bottom line: safety issues due to increasing oil and gas exploration and development.

I hope the progress on the new maps proceeds as planned. I've gotten somewhat worried over the last several months as I've watched the advertised map availability change from "April" to "Late April" to "May" to "Late May".

I'm flying to Bellingham on May 30th to begin the Northern Tier June 1st.  I really hope to receive my new maps 3 and 4 before I leave.  Yikes!

Just saw the AP article in the Seattle Times. My plans are to leave May 18, bike to work day (bike away from work day for me) from my home here in Everett WA.  Over US 20 or US 2, if 20 hasn't opened yet. Changing from the Norther Tier to the Lewis and Clark in ND. But looks like that will be Montana now.

Sounds like getting full printed maps by May 18 is not going to happen. Will there be some verbal addendum available from the web site?

Carla can tell you more, but I expect this change will be far too large to publish as an addendum. You could order the maps but have them held for mailing to General Delivery along the way. Or perhaps they could email a PDF to a friend's computer along the way. Or to your computer before you leave.

Yes, this re-route is too large to publish in the addenda. I don't know where you saw that the maps wouldn't be available until late May. We expect them in the office in late April. It usually takes 3-4 weeks for printing and they are going to the printer this Friday. Occasionally there's a delay at the printer so that's why it might be early May. If anyone wants directions as to how to set up a mail stop please email me: cmajernik@adventurecycling.org

Fantastic news Carla. Congratulations on getting this big job done so quickly. I'm going to order my maps today so I can get them while they're still warm.

BTW, I can't find where I (thought I) saw the "late May" prediction.

I am in a group leaving Seaside, OR.  June 3rd and will be traversing this portion of the Northern Tier.  I plan on updating my map set, but was wondering if the GPS data is currently available?

Thanks

Steve

Not yet. As soon as I can get my paws on a map, I will start work on the GPS data. It will take 2 - 3 weeks to get it done, checked, and published on the web site.

The revised GPS data for sections 3 and 4 are now included in the download at the web site.
