Health/Medical Insurance while cycling abroad
« on: September 01, 2012, 09:58:01 am »
Anybody have any experience with health insurance providers while traveling abroad? I found a company or 2 but they don't specify if (God forbid) I get hurt while cycling if they will cover it.
Never a bad day to ride...

You'll maybe get a better answer if you say what country you live in and what country(s) you want to tour in.   I found I had to read the small print of policies carefully.  If it isn't clear whether cycle touring is covered contact them. By e-mail, not phone, so any replied is in writing.

Do you have health insurance now? You may be able to obtain a low-cost rider from your present provider. Having insurance "abroad" is not the same as having access to emergency medical services, health care providers or hospital facilities. Such may be very different than what you are accustomed to or they simply may not exist at all. Just like being able to repair your bikes, you want everyone in your group to be thoroughly trained in advanced first aid so you can help each other in extreme situations.

I play go. I use Macintosh. Of course I ride a recumbent

First, read your existing policy.  I know it sucks, but that's the best way to find out. Most US carriers provide "out of network" coverage while you are travelling, but "out of network" means larger deductibles, copays and higher costs for services in general.
The next caveat is determining how reliable their service is on foreign soil, you may have some flaming hoops and minefields to navigate before services are actually paid.  Of the carriers I have handled Assurant is the only one which actually advertises worldwide coverage and recognition.
I can still do everything I used to, but now I'm mature enough to take a nap without being told.

During my brainstorming process for my current trip I kept track of what i was looking at. I'm not sure how relevant it is for you but take a look anyway, you might find something worthwhile...

When I spent a month in South Africa a few years ago, one of the requirements of the sponsoring organization was insurance that provided 'medical evacuation'... to cover a situation where you might need to get back home for continuing care, but a standard airline seat would  not be OK.

Since then, I've NOT purchased additional coverage while travelling... my regular coverage is OK for me overseas.  But if I were to be looking at policies I'd definitely check out their coverage of medical evacuation.

Safe riding, everyone!
