Generator Hubs and USB Devices

(1/3) > >>

Pat:
Hi - This is probably an old topic, but it is new to me.  I didn't quite see what I was looking for.

BASELINE CONFIGURATION:  I just bought a new wheel with a Sanyo Sport Generator NH - H27,  6 Volt, 3 watt.  The documentation isn't answering my questions.  Powering front and rear lights is straight forward

ACCESSORY QUESTION:  What is required to recharge iphones, gps units, batteries, etc?  (I am seeing a number of products with lots of $$$$)

Thanks for your patience if this is old ground,

Pat

Fred Hiltz:
You are right; this is an old topic with lots of experience recorded right here. Rather than run the search for you, I will suggest the search box at the top of the topis list on the  Gear page.

Pat, I just got a couple of items you might like.  One is an EZO power battery for <$40 from Walmart (http://www.walmart.com/ip/EZOPower-2-Port-External-Backup-Battery-7800mAh-Black/21550555).  It will charge ipads/phones and Nook and Samsung tablets - just about anything that can be charged from a USB port.  It will even charge these devices while being charged itself, i.e. it could be used as a cache battery.  I use it to power my Garmin Oregon.  I also got a Cygolite Metro 300 for ~$55.  Turns out I can charge or power this light (simultaneously) with the battery pack.  If both manufacturers are truthful in their advertising, using the EZO battery to backup the light should give about 10 hours burn time on high, or nearly infinite if a dynamo is charging the battery.  I haven't checked this out, but it doesn't seem unreasonable from what I have tried so far.  This is a very bright light for road use.  On low it is as bright as a one watt Planet Bike Blaze for comparison.  It has a circular, slightly yellowish beam: more pleasant than commonly bluish lights.
Eventually I will likely get a generator hub also, but for now the battery should take care of my power needs as long as I am near a lunch spot to charge the battery.
