Please advise: is Sept to late for Portland to Missoula?
« on: June 17, 2013, 04:02:03 pm »
I'm in Maine...the last time I rode in the Northwest I encountered some chilly weather in late August...so I'm wondering if Sept 15 is too late to start a Portland to Missoula ride on the L&C...? Thanks for any insights!

You could get an early storm, but it will likely be rain everywhere except Lolo Pass.
I've ridden eastbound in early Sept and it was blistering.
Westbound in later Sept and I got a few drizzly days near the coast.
Should be very pleasant - although the days are only about 12 hours and shortening.

Typically, late September/early October in western MT/Idaho is dry and sunny - what they call "indian summer." Nights could reach below freezing in the higher elevations but that probably wouldn't occur until you almost reach Missoula.
