Been a host and a guest many times. Been great every time.

Regarding advance notice: every single no-show (6) has been someone that has contacted me a couple of days to several weeks in advance. Invariably, their plans have changed by the time they get to me. I put on my profile that 24 hour notice is nice, but last minute may be accepted. If I can't host, I say I can't host.

Regarding background checks: the beauty of war showers hosting is you are never required to accept anyone. If it will be an inconvenience or something smells fishy, you say "Sorry, not available that night". Every time I get a request, I look that person up on warm showers and read ratings. (WS allows you to rate guests and hosts. Please use it for the benefit of others.) if I ever saw any questionable rating, I'd say no. I also usually google the person's name. If some Fraternity party scandal or other shady things came up, I'd say no. Most of the time, the person' strip blog comes up, which helps as well. (I don't see why it would take 48 hours to do those 2 simple background checks)
I find what others have written about guests and hosts to be the most beneficial info regarding who you end up hosting or guesting.

Little late to this thread....

I've been a warmshowers host in South TX for a little over a year. It has been very rewarding, I've met a lot of very interesting people. The most I hosted at one time was 22! Most of them camped on my property but I had a few stay inside. Invited a friend over to help with "logistics".

It was great, I rode with them the next day to their next destination.

So far, been great for me.

Dear Day Tripper:

You are what this website is all about.  Graciousness and hospitality are contagious, didn't you know?  Those you help never forget and always pass it on ten-fold.

Thanks for all you do.

Jack

Just sign up, at the least for my sake, ha. I have found it a valuable network. Sometimes it's information people are looking for, not just a stay. This year I have used it must then ever thanks to the Polar Vortex. I've been trekking from Buffalo, NY to Mobile Alabama following the Underground Railroad route since January 23 with my dog. The reality of comfort hit on day 2 after freezing in the tent with the pup whimpering. I just started clicking away, and most have at the least been responsive or understanding of the situation. Everyone thinks I'm crazy! I always provide a phone number and website so people don't have to debate is this guy for real. I've still got many miles to go until Alabama. Hopefully by then the temps go back up and I can resort back to mutt comfy tent where I can wake up when I want or stay put freely.
