Shipping a Bob Yak trailer
« on: November 27, 2013, 12:35:26 pm »
Does anyone have advice on shipping a Bob Yak trailer?  I need to get it to the start of my tour.  BikeTrailerShop.com sells a carrier but specifies that it works for the Ibex but not for the Yak.  Has anyone out there shipped one?  Thanks!

Maybe I'm missing something, but how about just making a box for it and shipping it UPS?

Go to your LBS and get 1-2 used bike boxes and use them to create a custom box for your trailer. I've done this a number of times for my Burley child trailer and my tandem. Takes a bit of measuring and effort, but you end up with a custom box. Make it as small as possible, as with UPS and FedEx every inch counts when you get into oversize packages.

I shipped mine by buying two small boxes (can't remember the size) and nested them together and taped shut.  I removed the fork and the wheel on the bob and it worked just fine.  I also have an Ortlieb big zip bag which I've used to ship my bob when I traveled by Amtrak.

I don't know if this is too late or not, but go to your local home furnishings store and get a "Lay-Z-Boy" lounge box.  They are super strong.  You will have to do some cutting and bending.  I bend the cardboard by laying it flat, putting a 1/2" diameter pipe on top and then pulling up on the box.  It bends perfectly in  straight fold.  I take the fork off to consolidate.  I got the "BOB Bag" and I just load it up and keep it right in the trailer.  Tape it all shut with packing tape and you are ready to fling it on the bus or plane.  I have done this several times and it works great!
