Dahlonega GA to Tallahassee FL Winter Route?
« on: August 15, 2014, 04:37:39 pm »
Hey I am new to this site and bike touring in general. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for biking routes across Georgia during the winter. I will be starting in Dahlonega GA around february and heading south to Tallahassee where I will join the Southern Tier Route to New Mexico. I tried to use google maps to get a route, but I am just not sure if the route it suggests will be the best one, especially if I do it in the winter.

I am mostly concerned about road closures in the winter and specific roads that I should avoid or seek out.
Here is a link to the route suggestions from google maps : https://www.google.com/maps/dir/Dahlonega,+GA/Tallahassee,+FL/@30.8651161,-82.9980552,8z/data=!4m14!4m13!1m5!1m1!1s0x885f663a6c225031:0x4107f4a9601eba83!2m2!1d-83.9843953!2d34.5261465!1m5!1m1!1s0x88ec8a5187124b53:0xebee077ad4fdb1f8!2m2!1d-84.2807329!2d30.4382559!3e1

Thanks for all your help!

Two thoughts.  First, I'd take the eastern route to avoid metropolitan Atlanta.  Second, most of the south, including most of Georgia, deals with snow on the roads by waiting a day or two for it to melt.  You're unlikely to have a road closure that lasts for more than a couple days, and if you do run into one, it'll close all the roads in the area.
