Question about Trek 520 on ebay
« on: November 12, 2009, 11:12:33 am »
Could someone please take a look at this listing for me? This bike doesn't look right.

I've never seen a 520 with a sloping top tube like this.

Thanks

Well, it's not a 2005 Trek 520 as you can see from this picture from the Trek site:

http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/2005/archive/520

But you can see that other years, such as the 2003, did have more top tube slope:

The angle of the ebay photograph (i.e., not straight on) distorts the slope somewhat, so it's difficult to do a direct comparison. The downtube shifters on this bike give it away as being much older than 2005. Trek's online archives don't go back any farther than 2003.

As the picture shows, its a tiny Trek 520.  I do believe the tiny frames had sloping top tubes way back when.  And do today as well.  The Trek archives do not show each frame size so just because the 2005 model shown on the trek site is not sloping, does not mean the tiny size was not sloping.  All Trek 520 frames have downtube shift bosses.  Even 2009 models.

This is the 2009 or 2010 model.  Its sloping.  I suspect Trek made all of the 520 sizes sloping recently.  Whereas a year or two ago only the tiny size was.

Thanks for all the help. The bidding is closed now but I assumed (correctly I hope) that the bike would have been too little for me.

The top is sloping because it is a 17 inch frame.  On small frame bikes the top tube slopes.  That way the bike will have a short top tube for  shorter reach (from seat to handlebars), proper stand over height. and still be able to use  26" or 27"/700 wheels on the front and rear. A few bike company's build small frame bikes with a rear wheel 26", 27", 700cm and a 24 inch from wheel. The best know company for this is Terry Precision Cycling.
