Banff to Roosville Route Questions
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:02:47 pm »
Hi there -

I am looking to do the Banff to Roosville piece in August.

For starters wondering how many days it takes at a moderate pace?

Is there anyone out there who has experienced it that would be willing to talk to me about it live?

Much appreciated.

Jessica

Hi Jessie,

Are talking about using an Adventure Cycling route? If so, which one? We have two that will cover the distance between those destinations.

Great Parks North, (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatparks.cfm), a road route

or

Great Divide Canada, (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/greatdivide.cfm), a mostly off road route

From the Routes & Mapping FAQ (http://www.adventurecycling.org/routes/faq.cfm):

How many days does it take to ride X number of miles?
Each individual and group will need to first determine how many miles a day they plan on riding (our road group tours average 60 miles per day.) When you have figured this out, take the total miles for the ride and divide it by the miles per day; this will give you the number of days it will take to complete your ride. Remember to add in a few layover or rest days, and keep in mind that some days you may exceed your expectations and some days you may not. (Total miles to be ridden/miles per day + layover days = # of days it will take to ride.)

Riding off road you generally cover fewer miles. It takes more energy to negotiate uneven terrain and navigation can be trickier than on road. You'll find some guidelines for average miles per day in our Bike Touring 101 article: http://www.adventurecycling.org/features/biketouring101.cfm

I hope this helps.

Jessica:
No one on our staff has ridden the entire Canadian part of the Great Divide, though some have done portions of it, though none of us have done the new re-route. Here are some links to things written about the new part of the route:

What kind of questions do you have? I am familiar with the route, and maybe can answer them. Call me 406-721-1776x218.

Jessica,

If you are wondering about the Great Divide Route, I may be able to answer some questions. I rode from Banff to Fernie last summer. Just let me know what you have questions about. I would plan about 35 miles a day because there is so much to see in the area and a few of the days have some hilly terrain.
