GORE-tex- breathable jacket with Removable Hood- Still made?
« on: November 12, 2010, 09:31:37 pm »
A/C/A:
I am at ends wit, been searching without answers......

I have a 1981 REI gore-tex jacket that lost all of its repellant and would not fit me now anyway (used riding x-USA 1982, x-Pa 1983, and all NSCA 1985) and is now retired!

In 1996 or '97 I got both Bike-Nash and Performance gore-tex jackets. I returned B-Nash and have continued to use Perfomance to this day. It is still h2o repellant but zipper is failing!

The point I am making here is:

-Of all the G-tex and breathable rainjackets I see designed for bicycling specific use, there is NO detachable rain hood. A rainhood is good to have when you are riding. Also, hood helps in the rain when at camp, walking, and hanging around after the days ride.

-Is there a new, improved way of not using a rainhood?

-Why has this attachment been removed from raingear being sold?

-Even more important- Where can I get a yellow refective Gore-Tex (breathable) rain-jacket that has a Tail, zippered arm-pits, and a zippered, detachable hood???

I have been searching for quite some time and honestly am so thankfull of your responses in advance.
Thx!

GoreTex is only one of dozens of fabrics and coatings that are purported to be breathable and waterproof. (My experience is that this is marketing hype but your mileage obviously was different than mine. I want waterproof when I'm in heavy rain and I want wind resistance when I'm riding in cold. I ride a recumbent so my needs for rain protection are slightly different. I don't need a tail so any good jacket does the job for me.)

Looks like AC sells some great rain gear, they used to sell Burley storm garments but have moved on to Showers Pass exclusively:

Hoods disappeared from cycling jackets long ago because the racing side of the industry drives all bike fashion. One rides with a super-lightweight waterproof jacket (a garbage bag with sleeves) and dons a waterproof helmet cover these days.

and there's this manly hood:

I carry an appropriately stout protective rain jacket for camp wear.

REI used to sell a great touring jacket that not only had a storeable hood, the tail was retractable and the sleeves zipped off. It disappeared from the catalog because it was ridiculously complicated and therefore outrageously expensive and all of those convenience features tended to leak.

If you're an ultralight or minimalist tourer, you may not find what you're seeking. As you say, most of the leads go nowhere. Be sure to visit the touring equipment retailers who advertise in AC, Sierra Trading Post and Campmor.

Might be easier to just sew a tail to your favorite jacket, get a helmet cover and carry a safety reflective vest?

I play go. I use Macintosh. Of course I ride a recumbent

Pearl Izumi makes a rain jacket that has a hood carried in an interior pocket.  I have one and am satisfied with it.

Event is the current go-to "breatheable / water proof" fabric.  It's worked well for me.  Shower's Pass Elite 2.0, jacket, detachable hood, pants - all sold separately.

Castelli offers the Radiation 1-2-3 jacket with hood. Pearl Izumi offers the P.R.O. Softshell 3X1 jacket with hood. They, also, offer a Stockton Jacket, in their Front Range Collection, that might be what you're after. Gore offers the Fusion jacket with hood.

Do they still make them? I am not sure, but if you happen to visit Beijing, it is possible to pick up top of the line Gore Tex jackets for $50.00 and maybe less. And yes they are genuine Gore Tex, not knock offs.

I just ordered one of these from Santa. http://www.bicycleclothing.com/Waterproof-Breathable-Rain-Jackets.html Detachable hood is optional.  http://www.bicycleclothing.com/Rain-Hood-Attachable.html I liked the fact that these were made in the USA, and promised lots of venting. I'll trust cyclists in Oregon to know how to design a good rain jacket.
