Los Angeles to New York June to August 2011
« on: December 03, 2010, 07:39:14 pm »
I'm planning to ride from LA to San Fran then head cross-country to New York, taking in the Grand Canyon and Washington DC on the way. I'll be setting out late June 2011 and riding up to 100 miles / day to finish by mid-late August. I'll be camping with the occasional cheap hotel.
I'm a 25 year old medical student living in London. I've cycled long-distance before, including London to Istanbul in 2007.
If you want to join me for all or part of this ride or have any useful advice (ie where should I go between Grand Canyon and DC?) I'd love to hear from you.

If at all possible I suggest heading from SF to LA, here's why;

1) Prevailing winds are north to south
2) The shoulder is wider on the seaward side of the road
3) The view is better

All three of these are excellent points.  I would not take them lightly!
May the wind be at your back!

Not to mention, if you ride from LA to SF, you'll be back-tracking south to get to the Grand Canyon.

Although I don't have a clue how you'd get out of LA cycling east!

Thanks for the advice guys.
The reason I planned to go North was that I wanted to cycle through Yosemite, so it makes sense to go East from SF. Are the wind and skinny shoulder strong enough reasons to make riding North a bad idea?
Also, I was considering riding through Death Valley. Is this sensible?

Death Valley in summer?  I'd check the weather records before I tried that one.  It can be well over 100 degrees then.
May the wind be at your back!

A skinny shoulder is something I could deal with, but head winds suck. I've know some that have gotten lucky and said it wasn't bad. You might be one of the lucky ones.

Yosemite is great, last year there was still snow on the roads in June. If it is clear, June would be a great month (not to crowded).

I went through Death Valley in the winter months. The temp got in the high 60s F and as low as 30s F at night. I would not consider it in the summer months although others have. They don't call it Death Valley for nothing.
