cycling from Portland Maine to Boston
« on: February 07, 2011, 11:43:48 am »
A group of us (Canadian women recreational cyclists) plans to cycle from Portland Maine to Boston in August as part of a cycling trip in Maine (probably taking the train the reverse direction or vice versa). Wondering about route choices (road bike), and which part of Boston we should stay in to be able to get in/out of town readily. This trip is only about 110 miles but we may stop part way to see the sights.

Checked out ACA's Atlantic Coast route?  It includes "spur" from main route into Boston.

Here is something else to consider: cycling to a town outside Rte 128 but near commuter rail, which gets you downtown comfortably and without Boston traffic to worry about. One can cycle happily and safely inside Rte 128 with local knowledge and some experimenting, and maybe you will have someone who knows the area. Otherwise, it's a hassle. I'd leave the bike at lodgings and take the train to shopping and sight-seeing. Boston is a great walking city; compact and interesting. Take a map, though!

I recently rode into Boston from Bedford, MA on the Minuteman Bike Path.  Once in Boston (Cambridge, MA, actually), I took the Charles River Path all the way to downtown.  I was on city streets for a couple miles, as I recall.

You can see pictures of the bike path in my journal for the day.

I live in Ipswich MA and have routes to get to Portsmouth, NH, as well as a great ride from Ipswich into Boston without traffic.  You can combine the following routes to put your route together:

Portsmouth to Newburyport MA  Route:   http://cyclingnewengland.blogspot.com/2011/01/newburyport-to-portsmouth.html

Newburyport to Ipswich   http://cyclingnewengland.blogspot.com/2010/12/cycling-great-salt-marsh.html

Ipswich to Boston :   http://cyclingnewengland.blogspot.com/2011/01/ipswich-to-boston.html
