Electronic Language Translator

Hello,

I am going on a world wide tour.  Has anyone used one of these electronic language translators?  Which one?  Effectiveness?  Any other suggestions for the language barrier?

Never used one or felt the need, just something else to worry about.

My method is to make a list of phrases you need ie "can i put my tent up here"
then get someone or use a translation service on line then write each phrase on a card even add a small drawing if appropriate. On the reverse I write it phonetically and try to speak it the same time as showing the card.

Learn your numbers and I used to test myself on passing car number plates.

And smile a lot and laugh at your mistakes cos you'll make loads.
