bike routes in western alabama
(1/1)
bobbiedobbs:
I am bicycling in western alabama in mid-september. Starting around Florence/Muscle Shoals and then south to Tuscaloosa via Rt 13, then South to Greensboro via Rt. 69, then west to Montgomery via Rt 14. I would like to hear from anyone familiar with any of these roads who can advise degree of traffic, shoulder (basic bike suitability) and especially from anyone who can suggest alternatives. What's the terrain like? Thanks.
JMilyko:
You might want to contact the Alabama DOT bicycle and pedestrian program. Contact information can be found here:
http://www.walkinginfo.org/assistance/contacts.cfm
Also, there are some general maps of suggested routes within the 2009 Draft Bicycle Pedestrian Plan that might be helpful:
https://www.dot.state.al.us/moweb/special_programs.htm
Let us know what you find out.

I tried contacting the Alabama bike pedestrian coordinator a few weeks ago by both phone and e-mail, with no response to either.

Sorry to hear that. Were the maps in the draft plan any help?
I'll send this out on our twitter account and see if we can get you some responses.
