Title: Pacific Coast Big Sur status
Post by: Babbitt on March 16, 2024, 10:46:47 am
Has anyone been through the section of HWY 1 that is closed due to the land slide at Big Sur recently?

I will be passing through in Mid April. I don't mind walking after the crews leave at 6. Is this possible?

What are the reroute options if it is impassable?

Thx

The road is still closed to vehicles from John Little State Natural Reserve to Kirk Creek campground.  No telling when it will reopen.  Don't know if you can ride it when construction crews are off.  There is a previous post on the detour.

Thanks, the only alternative routes I can in the forum are North Coast Ridge Road a gravel road with 2000 ft of climbing that looks like it is closed to cars and bicycles. Or I could take the big detour parallel to 101. With that option, I miss at least a third of the coast from San Francisco to Santa Barbara.

This might not be the year for this trip.

Below is the detour we have used to get around landslides on Highway 1 in Big Sur in previous years:

The 147.9 mile detour begins in Marina, and rejoins the Pacific Coast route just south of Cambria. The detour does not use US 101 at any point.

Thank you, that is quite the detour.

The recent rains have washed out another section of the coast road.  The south bound lane washed out near the Rocky Creek Bridge.  The state parks near Big Sur have been closed indefinitely.  The road is closed just south of Notleys Landing Viewpoint.  Along with the earlier washout there is no timeline for reopening the road.

Thank you for the update.

I have changed by trip plan to the Natchez Trace Parkway.

Hopefully they can clear this up and I can make the trip in a couple of years.
Title: Pacific Coast Big Sur option -Salinas Valley
Post by: delco55 on December 17, 2024, 12:59:22 pm
Due to the Regent's landslide and the closure of Nacimiento Fergusson Rd. My son and I detoured through the Salinas Valley in mid Oct. riding on the East side of the Valley a couple of miles from Highway 191. We left the State Park in Capitola and rode to the campground in King City. It is slightly over a 100 miles, but generally flat with a few minor hills along the way. From King City we rode 55 miles to a campground at Lake Nacimiento. Some very steep hills, but beautiful country. Following day we rode to Morro Bay Campgound, another 55 miler with steep hills, but beautiful. Nothing like riding through Big Sur, but was enjoyable!

We rode the Pacific Coast Rte Summer 2024. We rented a vehicle out of Marina, Ca and drove around to San Simion, Ca. It worked for us but I have read that many cyclists have ridden the detour with success.
I would caution those who might cross the slide area after workers have gone home. We were told of a cyclist who was crossing the slide area and he slid down 200 ft off the cliff. His rescue was delayed due to the fog along the coast in the summer time. We were told this by a Park Law Enforcement Ranger.

Good luck with your future plans. Happy Trails!
