We are planning a cross country trip from Jacksonville, FL to Portland, OR beginning next month. We plan to follow Adventure Cycling routes for a significant part of our journey. However, 30% of the trip we have customized our route and are off the Adventure Cycling map using Google Maps and Mapquest's "Bike Route" option. This issue I am experiencing is when I send the route to my iPhone both Google Maps and Mapquest mobile app does not follow my custom route. The app reroutes me based on the automobile route.
I am sure others have experience this issue and there is a simple solution I am overlooking.

I have used maps.me app for years on my smart phone and tablet, GDMBR - England - France - for examples. Have most of the ACA routes on it. Made routes from google maps and moved them over to maps.me. It is also great for geocaching.

I agree that it is a much better idea to save the route in advance, when you know it will work for you.
In Google Maps, you have the option to export routes as KML. Store them directly in a Dropbox (http://www.dropbox.com) account to access them while on the road.
While at it, I recommend Ride with GPS (http://www.ridewithgps.com) as a far more flexible & powerful tool for mapping routes. It provides multiple map layers. You can export routes in GPX & KML.
Maps.me (http://maps.me) app for both iOS & Android works natively with KML files, & allows you to download maps for offline use.
