Does anyone have any idea how much the Giant Alloy Rear Rack 26”/27”/700C weighs? I’ve searched for hours and couldn’t find any website with the weight. Tried contacting Giant and Topeka but no luck.
Wondering if it’s heavier or lighter than my Transit Rack. It’s listed at 590G (1.3lb) on their website.

Most all rear racks are going to be in the same weight range. This one, being mostly aluminum, is going to be on the low end of the weight, cost and capacity range. I’d worry much more about durability.

I'd still like to know how much it weighs and it's baffling none of the websites that sell this rack have the weight listed.
I currently have the Transit rack pictured below. It's pretty cheap too and has been through 5 tours and two accidents including one that was major. In fact it was the only piece other than the peddles I salvaged off my totaled bike this past February.
My debate is if I keep the Transit rack on for Route 66 or switch to the Giant rack? I only carry 10-15lbs of gear while on tour.

Why spend money you don’t need to? It can’t possibly weigh a significant amount less.

It was a Christmas gift and I have a second bike without a rack currently. It's an older Fuji I use to run errands on.

I’m confused. Does this mean you already have the rack?

Correct. Trying to figure out which one is lighter is all since I can't get Giant or Topeak to reply.

Do you have a kitchen scale?
You can’t believe the manufacturer specs on weight anyway.

I do not. Although I may order one. They're pretty cheap on Amazon.

If you care about gear weight, you’ll need one anyway. I weigh all my gear. Besides, you can use it for cooking too.

I ordered one and it'll be here on Friday. I had a gift card with $8.26 left on it and found one for $7.99. Thanks for the suggestion.

Take it to the post office at a slow time and have them weigh it.

Hang one rack on a bungy. Measure the bungy. Hang the other rack on the bungy and measure. The rack that extends the bungy the most is the heavier of the two.

Thanks for the suggestion. Based on that test the Giant one is slightly heavier than the Transit. The bungee extends about 1/2" more on the Giant. The Giant is also wider but shorter than the Transit. I feel like length is better than width for a rack while touring based on what I carry.

Great idea.

Scale came today and was able to weigh both racks..
Transit: 590 grams or 1.30 pounds
Giant: 706 grams or 1.55 pounds
Thanks for the idea John Nelson

Giant finally replied. An interesting answer to my question.

I use the trunk Topek and bag to it, for many years. It is made of aluminum and weighs very little. The bag is conveniently mounted on rails, quickly put on and quickly removed.
