Title: Need rim recommendation for Surly Ogre build for touring/bikepacking
Post by: threplogle on March 30, 2019, 03:09:08 pm
Hello all, new member here looking for some 29” rim guidance for my 2019 Surly Ogre build.  Looking to build some 32h or 36h bombproof wheels.  Here is what I’m planning so far:

Front Hub:  SON 28 Dynamo
Rear Hub: DT Swiss 350
Spokes: DT Swiss Competition
Tires: 29x2.5 max
Rims: No idea!

I weigh about 206lbs and will likely load the bike with no more than 50lbs of gear.

Thanks!
-Tom

My LBS  recommended the Velocity Dyad for my Gunnar Grand Touring http://www.velocityusa.com/product/rims/dyad-27. I've run them 2000 miles loaded touring without needing any truing yet. If you want to run larger than a 38 mm tire then the Velocity Cliffhanger.

Thanks for the recommendation.  I'll check out the Cliffhangers.

I went with Velocity Chukker's based on Peter White's recommendation.  If you haven't been to his website it is: www.peterwhitecycles.com.  On the website, he states that the Chukkar's are his strongest wheels.

The website has a wealth of information on touring equipment.

He is also a top wheel builder. I bought my wheels from him and also went with the SON 28 dyno hub. IF you're planning on using the dyno hub to charge USB battries, check out "The Hub" chargers. I have a Hub 5 on my Surly Disc Trucker and use it to trickle charge a 26000 mAH battery which then charges my phone.

Good luck!!!
Paul

I'm a fan of DT Swiss rims. They're strong, finished nicely and easy to build solid wheels.

There was a recent article about touring tubeless and the best rims to be able to change on the fly and the most durable.

Two recommendations from the article
WTB Scraper
Easton Arc

Both new releases

I recommend getting tubeless rims; then if you decide to go tubeless, you are set for rims, even if you have no plans to go tubeless now.

I will be having a new wheelset built for touring ...

am looking very closely at the new Levithian rims in 36/36v .... I wish to use tubeless tyres but will also be able to use normal clinchers:

https://astralcycling.com/products/leviathan-tandem (https://astralcycling.com/products/leviathan-tandem)

Son Delux Wide Body dynamo hub (builds a stronger wheel):

rear hub is still undecided (My Miyata 1000 has 126mm spacing and I don't want to have that widened to 130mm), so I may get a good used rear hub with steel axle such as a Royce, Phil Wood etc

spokes will be Sapim Strong

lights will be Supernova E3 Triple 2 for the front and the Supernova rear light

I will also get the E Werk charging setup
