Without your milage per day it is tough to make a suggestion.

I did enjoy my trip along the norther half of the lake.  I started woth the ferry from ludington then went thru green bay and followed the lake.  Took the ferry to mackinaw island  and then they traverse city towards  the ferry dock

You may find it helpful to check out the League of Michigan Bicyclists.   https://www.lmb.org/bike-mi/michigan-bike-routes-maps/
They have organized tours, but you can use their itinerary to get an idea. For example, they have the shoreline west tour, which passes through Traverse City.    Go here, and scroll down to the itinerary section to see how they spread out the miles.  https://www.lmb.org/ride-calendar/shoreline-west-2019/

Additionally, the Michigan department of transportation published excellent maps, which  you could use to map out a route. we relied on them for detours and alternates on the ACA North Lakes route last summer.  They have print and online versions. Excellent, detailed maps.   https://www.michigan.gov/mdot/0,4616,7-151-9615_11223-146053--,00.html
Hope that helps.

ACA does a tour that starts and ends in Traverse City.  I did the trip a couple of years ago and it's a really nice route.  Nice camping spots and enough small towns if you prefer motels.  You might want to check the ACA site for Michigan Lakeshore under self contained tours for a route idea.

Thanks for the ideas, we are thinking 50-60 miles a day.

Western Michigan is very Bike Friendly.  US-31 is pretty ride-able (except thru Traverse City, but there is a TART trail that parallels).  You could circumnavigate the Lake, but I think getting through Chicago could be a challenge, but people do it all the time.  There is a ferry between Luddington and Manitowoc you could take advantage of.  You could go up along Lake Michigan and down Lake Huron and then ride back (I did a trip that way back in 2000).

I think you have lots of choices, and the previously mentioned resources will be helpful.  Google maps is helpful.  So is, the state of Michigan, League of Michigan Bicyclists, Michigan Trails and Greenways (their name keep evolving), and Adventure Cycling.  You might Google DALMAC routes too.

Here's a route we did in 2011 from the ferry in Manitowoc to The Bridge in St Ignace https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/44979934/. This link https://www.mapmyride.com/routes/fullscreen/45065814/ goes from The Bridge (bikes are trucked across)  to the ferry in Luddington (with stops at campgrounds.)
Beautiful tour with wonderful restaurants in Michigan.

Only friends can see your route.  You need to make them public. John

OK. Try again and let me know if I didn't do it right. I've been using ridewithgps.com instead of mapmyride.com in recent years.

We started at the ferry in Manitowoc and went north. Daily distances were: 47,73, 60, 82, 64, 57, 78, 64, 51, & 8.5  miles.

also planning a trip to northern michigan in september, just picked up the book "Biking Northern Michigan" off amazon. Looks good, have just skimmed through it though. Updated in 2018. Local history, dining spots, etc. Includes suggestions for linking together some of the day trips into longer loop rides (one up to 450 miles).

Michael B, keep us posted. I'll probably be coming up in mid-September and hammock camp my way along. The MDOT maps in the link above are great. Thinking of riding the road from Ludington up to the big Bridge and then the North Country Trail back south into Ludington. My schedule should be pretty flexy so I'll shoot for a good forecast!

Is the North Country Trail bikeable?

There is the North Western State Trail, which connects Mackinaw City to Petoskey.  This  is a great trail, though there is a lot of crushed limestone sections which are okay for wider tires. We did the route on our tour bikes with 35mm tires and were pleased with the route. The section headed south from Mackinaw, and the section north of Petoskey are paved.

If you are asking about the North Country Trail, that is a hiking only trail, from NY to North Dakota.   It may be that a previous poster was mixing up the two trails.
