Looks like an ACA Van in video. So sad, be careful out there! https://abc11.com/liberty-county-bicycle-accident-6-cyclist-hit-injured-cyclists-roadways/11183968/

It is a narrow margin of safety, about 3 feet at most. In Stuart, Florida I knew 7 men who were killed cycling, and others who were hit by cars. Of course, that did not happen within a few days. It was more like 15 years. However, these men were not cyclists. None ever toured at all. They used bicycles because they were poor and unable to buy cars, or they lost their licenses for drunk driving, or both.

The driver who hit the six on the southern tier in Texas is at fault. There is plenty of space for motor vehicles and bicycles. Any attentive driver can leave room for a cyclist. I have done it many times. So have others. There was plenty of clear roadway between the driver and the cyclists. How could he not have seen them there? He or she would have to be blind.

I read more about this. Some people around Houston believe it is acceptable to coal roll cyclists, swerve near them deliberately, and cause dangerous encounters. According to an article, a judge talking about the cyclists said they did not like their kind around there.

To clarify:  six cyclists on a training ride were hit by a sixteen year-old driver in Waller County, Texas on September 25th.  Four of the riders were taken to local hospitals.  The driver was allegedly harassing the cyclists and has been charged with six counts of felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Six cyclists on a cross country tour (Southern Tier???) were hit by a driver in Liberty County, Texas on October 30th.  Three, four or five cyclists were taken to area hospitals depending on which news report you read.  One of these cyclist died.  I read on a local blog that manslaughter charges have been filed on the driver, but I haven't been able to confirm that.

Correct.  There were two separate incidents in Texas that just happened to involve six cyclists.  People have also been confusing the two on Bikeforums.net

In relation to road bicycle touring, the most criminal drivers I encountered were in Louisiana. It had to be deliberate. When they pass that closely, within a few inches, over and over again repeatedly, it is deliberate. Now, I live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Road cycling here is risky. The new bike lanes add a margin of safety. They are an after thought. Cycling only two miles the other day, drivers cut me off twice. I was on my legal right-of-way. If I had not some to a halt, they would have hit me. Weeks ago I cycled to Planet Fitness at night. On the way back I was riding in a designated bike lane with an ultra bright white blinking light on the front, and a bright red light on the back. This was in a 45 mph speed zone on University Drive. Two vehicles came up from the rear, weaving in and out of traffic like maniacs, and crossing multiple lanes. They were going 80-90 mph, and blew by me so close I could have reached and touched them.

Occasionally the news here reports people killed while cycling. From what I have seen here, cycling roads is not safe. Florida had a reputation as the "dive or die state" for cycling.
