Title: Anyone name their bike?
Post by: Jackalope on May 20, 2004, 06:13:47 am
I came up with hurricane one day on a transAm tour.. got to the Green River in Mammoth Cave NP, and the one day that year the ferry shut down was the day we needed to cross the river.  So I decided nothing short of a hurricane would stop me and I decided to swim over with my bike :p

my bike's name is not fit to print in a family publication...of course it usually only hears it's name on some exceptionally cruel uphill or when something is broke!

Moose. Actually, Moose 1 and 2. Where I ride, the wiley ungulates are fairly common, and I am always worried that a typically nearsighted Bullwinkle is going to think me and my mountain bike, with it's wide bars and bar ends, are a competitor with it's head lowered as a challenge.

I guess you have to be in Minnesota.

Mighty Glory!  I named her on my Solo X-Country trip last summer.  I hooked up some mini speakers to my handlebars and brought 8 cds along with me.  I must of listened to them a thousand times.  But everytime the Jerry Garcia Band song "The Mighty Glory" came on, I kicked things up another notch.  She's a pretty one.  :)

As two of us were sitting on a curb in somewhere South
Dakota mid-way through a cross country trip a few years ago,
watching the flags on the poles in front of a convenience
store indicate the headwind was continuing, and sipping a
cold coke in the 100 degree heat, an elderly gent
approached, did a sidelong look at the two touring rigs
leaning up against the building in the shade, voiced the
usual "boy what a load comments" and annoited the two
beasts the "Wire Donkeys".

Rocinante, the name of Don Quixote's horse.  My wife had name decals made for the bike just before my cross country trip this summer.  I took a few pictures of the bike in front of wind farm generators at 2 or 3 spots along the route. Told me something about the area I was in!

Changed "Moose 2" to "Silver Wolf" because of all the WTB modifications on my Trek 4600. I suppose that would make me "WolfRider"!

I did.

Mine is a Burley Canto recumbent. My first weekend out, I collided with
a reckless BMXer on the local multi-use trail. Being as my bike in SWB
mode looks like a rhinocerous with the derailleur and front-most head
tube, I named my bike "Rhino"

My Trek 520 is named 'Elway', after I bought it in Colorado and my mate reckoned it was a nice shade of 'Bronco Blue'

My Thorn Nomad has loosely been dubbed 'WAP' ... 'wing and a prayer'

My Giant tourer is unnamed as yet other than being called 'bl**dy thing' now and again ...

The Myata MTB is "the pick-up truck", and the Litespeed road bike is "the Lamborghini", and living in Texas I spend most of my time on the pickup truck. Bob trailer once a week for groceries, runs to the Home Depot......Regards  Mark of the Dalton Boys

I recently had a Surly Long Haul Trucker built up by Robinson Wheel Works in San Leandro, CA. I had heard that Surly was originally going to name it's new touring model the Mother Trucker...and that's what I call it. I guess LHT sounded a lot more respectable, but I like Mother Trucker!

I have'nt named any of my bicycles.  If I did, I'd probably name it something like "Good Times", then
whenever I tour I could let the "Good Times" roll.

Obvious really, my BMX Cruiser is used for 'rockhopping' [not by me!] so is 'Rocky', my Puegeot Princeton a 700C drop bar mtb in purple is 'Prince' [think 'Purple Rain'] and my Beach Cruiser is a Meichi Buffalo so is 'Buffy', ideal as she started life as a girls' bike plus we all know the American lassie she is named after, perfect for an American style bike! :8|:

Last year on the Southern Tier my Trek 5200 (pulling a BOB) was named Mariah - for the wind.  This was changed to Maria (pronounced the same) when my wife, Maria (pronounced about as you'd expect) found out.  After 28 years of marriage I'm still able to miss most of the land mines..... :)

Didn't we cover this topic about a year ago?

My Trek 4600 is the "Silver Wolf" because of it's color and it's numerous WTB modifications. (Basically anthing with "Bontrager" on it is now, or soon will WTB.)

My Trek 930SHX is the "Moose" because I am always wondering how a moose will react when it sees this thing with handlebars that looks for all the world like a bull with it's head lowered to attack.

My Marin road bike as noted before, is called "Testimony" or sometimes "Godspeed".

Ride safe,
Hans

The first bike I named, which was the third I came to own since having fallen in love with riding in 1997, was dubbed The Tofubicycle. Since then I've always dug way down deep when it has come to naming my other bikes. There is Tofu II, Tofu III, Tofu IV, and so on.

"Lewis" and "Clark". No, not that Lewis and Clark. as I stated here earlier, I took to, at least in my head, referring to my Trek 4600 as the "Silver Wolf" because it was silver, and had so many WTB after-market parts. (WTB's logo is a wolf.) I have always called my black "cop" mountain bike the "Moose" because when I was actively doing volunteer patrol in Minnesota's Superior National Forest, MN's primary moose habitat, I always wondered if a near-sighted moose would mistake me on my bike for a competitor during rut season. I sort-of named the Volpe, "Discovery" but it didn't really stick.

Yesterday I sold the 4600 and bought a new bike, a Novara Safari. Basically, as I begin my preparations to ride to Portland and the Pacific Ocean on the Lewis and Clark Bicycle Trail, the Volpe, which is the best, most comfortable bike I have ever owned, will carry me over the road segments and the Safari will haul me and my gear over the Lemhi and Lolo passes. For that reason, I have named the rock steady, steel-framed, long haul Volpe, "Clark" and the nimble, off-trail exploring capable aluminum Safari, "Lewis". So now, I introduce you to....Lewis and Clark.

Ride safe,
Hans

The answer is Western Flyer, which is also the name of my two kayaks and my marine radio call sign.

I found a pair of original Western Flyer bicycle decals on EBay.  I sanded the Bianchi logos off my forks and Western Flyer is going on as part of my de-branding effort.  I wonder if this de-branding is just a Left Coast phenomena?  Particularly here in Portland, Oregon I see more and more bicycles (some pretty fancy) with the logos taped over or covered up with consciousness raising bumper stickers.

My first mountain bike, a green trek 850 antelope brought me back to the joys of my childhood. My first bike,at 6yrs, a hand me down, schwinn, 16 inch balloon tire coaster brake. Was an early instument of my emancipation. I went anywhere and everywhere on that bike. If my parents had only known! I got the trek 850 in my middle thirties after ensuing years off and on road bikes. I named the trek "Tomcat" because I was back to tom-cattin' around the neighborhoods again!
