Title: Green Mountain Loop, map 10 - 2009
Post by: Peaks on November 08, 2009, 04:35:51 pm
For those contemplating using the Crown Point Bridge across Lake Champlain, rather than cross the lake at Fort Ticonderoga, the bridge is now closed.  See: http://www.boston.com/news/local/vermont/articles/2009/11/01/lake_champlain_bridge_closure_presents_hardships_for_businesses_workers/?page=1

Wait a minute! That doesn't sound like a "temporary closure."

The replacement bridge is scheduled for summer 2011. Meanwhile, a free (subsidized) ferry will open in February 2010, ice conditions permitting.

Now it appears that the Ticonderoga ferry is closing also.: http://www.timesargus.com/article/20100102/NEWS02/1020317/1003/NEWS02&template=dialup

I wonder if it's a permanent closing or seasonal closing.  If it's permanent, then a reroute for both the Green Mountain loop and the Northern Tier

That ferry has always closed in winter due to ice. They tried to keep it open this year to take some of the bridge traffic, but it is tiny and did not make much difference. Neither NY nor VT came up with money to pay for insurance after December, and the ice would probably have won out soon, so it closed.

The ferry company http://www.middlebury.net/tiferry/ (http://www.middlebury.net/tiferry/) says they are closing for the season today.
