good idea but basically it boils down to cost and convenience.

if i take my bike with me on british airways it goes on the plane as over sized/sports baggage as part of my baggage allowance at no extra charge as long as its below the weight and size limits. done this twice now to the US and works really well from the uk. other airlines charge extra simply because its regarded as sports gear or gets a surcharge because its oversized.

if i send it as cargo from the UK which is what an international shipper would do then that is significant cost however i will re-investigate sending it separately via bikeflights to the start point. sending it internally in the US from hawaii to my start point may be more feasible? but of course i then have to add cost for getting to the bike shop to pick it up and their cost for handling it regardless of whether they assemble it for me. i used bikeflights  for sending the bike and gear within the US to the friends address i was staying at last time i was there and it was quite reasonable and of course no problem with picking it up.

i love cycling round the US but doing so from the UK it is an expensive hobby so any way of reducing the cost is welcome.

yes i thought of that one but i did think it may be taking a bit of a liberty asking a complete stranger to put themselves out for that. the bike shop one could be a go'er.

hi everyone,
wondering if any locals can advise where i could leave my dismantled bike and gear for a couple of weeks somewhere in Honolulu? plans are at the moment to fly myself and bike stuff from the UK to Honolulu next march where i intend to join an organised tour of the pacific war battlefields. ideally i'd like to drop my bike and gear in Hawaii until i return to avoid any unnecessary or excess baggage charges or problems lumping the bike and gear onto small aircraft with  limited hold space. i cant use the bike during the battlefield tour anyway so it makes sense to leave it somewhere secure in Hawaii for the duration. on returning to Hawaii on completion of the tour i would then fly back to the continental US with the bike and gear to start the ACA trans-am. any suggestions for secure storage in Honolulu for about 2 weeks? may well do a some local biking in Hawaii before flying out again. thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Urban Cycling / cycling from boston logan to brookline - recommendations?

does anyone have any recommended routes/map from logan airport term E to the brookline area? am flying over to do the trans am and would like to say i cycled the whole time i was over in the US. am starting my ride from boston down to the east start point at yorktown.

i'm sure dozens of people have ridden it so am interested to know what to expect. I am about to hit santa barbara going north along the ACA pacific coast route. Usually i avoid riding the interstates and main trunk  roads if at all possible.

whats the section like heading north out of santa barbara up to say lompoc? is it worth doing this early in the morning with less traffic?  looks like 20+ miles of hell road to me?

Crossing the Mississippi at Vicksburg with a cycle:

Don't know how many have been caught out by this but I was, as my mapping s/w indicated I could cycle across and I could n't find any info on the web to confirm or deny it.

There is no walkway across the interstate bridge and you are not allowed to cycle across it. The old bridge is closed to ALL traffic. Try to time your arrival on a normal working day so that people are around. If you come in from the East go to the Bridge Maintenance unit next to the Visitor Center and ask about crossing to the other side. Mo the team leader is extremely helpful and will advise accordingly. If coming from the West try the other office on the western bank (I think its underneath the old bridge entrance gate which will be locked). There may be someone there who can advise or even take you across. If not ring the sheriffs office and they will be able to contact the bridge team or give you their number to ring direct. This is all during normal working hours, mon - fri. Weekends is probably best to ring the sheriffs office 1st - 601-636-2511 or the police number 601-636-1761. Do not under any circumstances try to get round the barriers or use the train tracks. At best you will be returned to where you started, at worst ( and most likely ) you will get arrested. Dept of Homeland Security rules apply! If all this fails try the Visitor Center for advice. Theres not really any parking areas on either side to approach motorists driving pickups or trucks who you can bribe to take you over either. Hope this helps. Andy

made some enquires this morning at the visitor center. if going from east to west  you can ask the bridge maintenace guys for a lift across. they are next to the visitor center by the entrance to the old (closed) bridge. If i remember Ill ask them about going in the other direction.

looks like the old vicksburg bridge has been closed. is it possible to use the new one to cycle across to Louisiana? can't believe there is no access for pedestrians and cyclists to cross but can't find any info on it.

lots of good helpful advice here. i have no choice in some places to ride the interstate but as in the UK its sometimes inevitable to have to use a very busy main road or go 10's of miles out of my way. I will look out for the signs directing me off as required. if i can avoid interstates  I certainly will as i'd rather have the peace and quiet.

hi all,
I am a UK rider currently on my way across the US  and am confirming the route for my western section. am pondering on which main roads allow cyclists in the above states. can interstates be used where there are no other options?   i'm using delorme topo 8 to help plan the routes to the places i want to see and it comes back with some very long routes and surely can't be right.   in some places the only viable road appears to be the interstate but i thought they were off limits to cyclists ? can anyone advise on the rules for this?
