Gear Talk / Touring Pedals
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:22:24 pm »
I live in western PA and we have hills and more hills. You really need clipless around here. I'm constantly swapping out the pedals and lending a bike here and there to someone who doesnt have SPD compatable shoes. Occasionally I will hop on one of these rides with my old touring shoes (no cleats) and take a spin. I notice immediately that I miss the clip in factor.

Gear Talk / great divide mountain bike tour
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:07:07 pm »
That tour looks amazing. I believe there were several people who did it this past year on unsuspended rigs, a few single speeds and one guy who attempted it on a fixie.

I would be more concerned your 20 year old bike is up to the rigors of that ride. I mean when you're out there on that ride you are OUT there.

Dont get me wrong, your Rockhopper probably has original parts draped on it that are way sturdier than a lot of stuff being sold today. Top mount shifters are the way to go. I would just make sure the bike is thoroughly checked over by a certified wrench before you start out.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / What is the best GPS for cyclist?
« on: November 19, 2007, 11:01:41 pm »
Geeg,

I'm a total novice with my GPS but I have the exact model you do. What mapping software do you utilize? I'm interested in creating maps for posting on a web page. I already purchased the Delorme Topo maps as they were suggested by the REI sales person (my GPS was actually featured on the box the software was packaged in). I know its just a matter of learning this stuff.

General Discussion / Bike insurance

Thats an interesting question. I have no clue of an answer which is probably not what you wanted someone to comment with.

I know a couple of years back there was a guy competing in the Great Divide Bike Race and a few days in to his trip from Canada to Mexico his bike was stolen. He obviously had to abandon. It would have made it a little easier to swallow had there been some kind of insurance on his stuff, but then again it kind of sounds like such an animal if it did exist would be pretty pricey.

Thats an amazing tour..one that will most certainly change your life. I've never undertaken anything even remotely like that but I've read several accounts where it was extremely encouraged to carry packs of cigarettes for bribes.

Good luck!!

And make sure you are ready and willing to keep a detailed journal.
