Gear Talk / Carradice Panniers

that's a bummer that they aren't waterproof. Their website claimed they were but in practice there weren't huh? Thanks for the heads up. I am hoping to get away from the whole plastic bag thing.

Gear Talk / Carradice Panniers

Does anyone have any experience with these panniers? My wife has a pair of Ortliebs that I have borrowed and liked in the past but now it is time to make my own purchase and I am leaning towards something a little more out of the box. I like the Super C's, I am intrigued by their waxiness, and rugged style. Can anyone help with your practical experience? My concerns are that they might be TOO big - for instance when commuting to work with them only half full are they a hassle? I am also interested to hear, if possible, about the latching system. Thanks so much for anything you might be able to share!

Gear Talk / Rear bike rack
« on: December 09, 2008, 09:06:08 pm »
Thanks for all the feedback. Following the advice here I did some research into the Tubus line. Since I don't have heal clearance issues, I think I am going for the Cargo. It is a touch lighter and cheaper with the same weight capacity. Thanks for the help!

Gear Talk / Rear bike rack
« on: November 29, 2008, 08:18:02 pm »
The time has come for me to buy a new rack. The one I bought before was crummy and after several years of abuse it finally has given in to the inevitable collapse. I do a lot of touring with 30 to 50lbs of gear. Does anyone have a strong recommendation of a rear rack that is not too expensive but is substantial enough that I will not have to worry about it for several more years? I use 700c wheels, my current bike is Soma Double Cross but I am upgrading soon to a LHT or a Atlantis.

Thanks so much!

Routes / Atlantic Coast

Jim, Did you, by any chance, post a journal of your trip. I would love to read more details. I am new to the East Coast and this looked like a lovely trip but I am really clueless. I suppose that is the fun of it!!

Routes / Atlantic Coast

That is good to hear about the southbound prevailing winds. I have been thinking about a loop from the Virginia beach area onto the barrier islands near Kitty Hawk all the way down to Willmington and back up to complete the loop along the main land. I am taking some new tourists along so I am hoping for some really nice scenery. The one trip report I read from the area was pretty dry with no reference to the area's natural beauty, which left me somewhat worried.

Routes / Atlantic Coast

I just bought the map section for the Atlantic Coast route that starts in Richmond VA and ends in Wilmington (?) NC. From the little detail provided on the site there seems to be two separate routes. One that stays on the mainland and the other that runs down the barrier islands. I love the idea of biking down the barrier islands. I imagine there are a lot of ferries though. Anyone done this route? What did you think? Thanks!
