Have a great ride!  I don't think there will be any chance of catching you, but if you write a blog I'd like to read it.

General Discussion / Southern Tier March and April 2012
« on: December 04, 2011, 10:21:43 am »
I'm planning an unsupported ride West-East on the southern tier starting from San Diego on March 1, 2012.  I plan to end in Jacksonville, FL by April 30.  I was wondering who I might meet on the ride going either direction.  If you're going to be on the route let me know.  I look forward to meeting you.

I did the TransAm East to West last year traveling from Yorktown, Va to Seaside, OR and had a great time meeting other riders.  I wrote about the trip on CGOB.

General Discussion / Re: Motorbike riders out there?
« on: February 11, 2011, 07:03:52 pm »
I am a long time m/c rider. I currently have a BMW R1150GS with a 10 gal tank.  I'm an Ironbutt Association member and have ridden many endurance rides.  My longest was traveling to 49 states in 8 days, 9 hours, 37 minutes.  The Association requires you to ride 1000 miles in 24 hours to be a member.  On the 49 state ride I rode over 1000 miles per day for 8 straight days.

I'm leaving on a slower but challenging transam ride on my Surly April 26 from Yorktown.  I'll be a few days past my 60th birthday when I leave.  Can't wait!!

Trailer is still available if you are planning a trip in 2011.  A Bob Yak 28 PLus which includes the dry sak for sale.  It is new in the box and never assembled.  I bought it for a trip and it is not going to be used.  I'll sell it for $260 + shipping.  I you live close by we can also make arangements to pick up locally.  Shipping is $30 or less to anywhere in the lower 48.  Compare prices as this one considerable less than comparable sales from a vendor or even Ebay.

GPS & Digital Data Discussion / Re: Anyone using SPoT Tracker for Trips?
« on: December 24, 2010, 07:30:30 pm »
I just purchased a spot for a cross country trip on the Transam next spring.  I'm taking it to be able to check in every night with friends and family even if my cell phone doesn't work in remote areas.  There are 4 of us going and I'll include each wife on the distribution list.

I have been around them in the long distance/endurance motorcycle community.  I think over all they are well worth the peace of mind.  The main thing is to use it before the trip and make sure you know how it works before you go.  They are technology and don't work exactly the way you may think.  For instance a friend was using a spot which he turned on and hit the send button.  The transmission always failed.  The problem was he needs to let the Spot locate the satellites after turning it on which may take 5 minutes and then hit the send button.  It works every time that way.  So some poeple just can't figure it out and give up.  Overall though I think that are great.  I seriously doubt many long time users complain about the them.

I am looking at CoPilot Live V8.  Apparently, it works on Droid, iPhone and WinPhones and lets you load maps from US, North America, Europe and other areas on the phone and then just use the phones GPS capabilities.  POI are available as well, you can use various forms of transportation for routing including bicycle.  It's supposed to be as good as TomTom and Garmin GPS's.  I haven't used it yet just reading reviews.  It's $19.99 on my Droid and no subscription fees?  Has anyone here used it?

I can’t sell it for less than $290 including shipping to Portland, I just looked on EBAY for a price comparison and the lowest priced 28 plus new is $368 including shipping.  So it’s a bargain at $290.  Someone will buy it at that price as we get closer to the riding season.

Routes / Re: North to Alaska

Thanks for the reply windrath.  I live in VA and am planning a Transam ride starting next May.  I was toying with the idea of branching off the transam route in Missoula and going to Hyder, AK crossing into Canada at Oroville/Osoyoos.   It may be too much to do in one ride, but the idea is interesting and your reply comfirms that it's possible.  I wasn't thinking about going all the way up the Cassiar Hwy, but that would be a beautiful ride too.

Routes / North to Alaska
« on: September 03, 2010, 01:33:40 pm »
I'm interested in what the roads are like from Osoyoos, BC to Cache Creek thru Kamloops.  I was thinking about riding 97 to Kamloops and then 1 to Cache Creek.  I would like to go to Hyder, AK/Stewart, BC.   Are there any restricted roads that I couldn't ride on?  I am familiar with the rest of the route.  Any help would be appreciated.
