Gear Talk / pannier advice

I have a full set of Arkel's, and am really pleased with them.  They may be a bit steep price-wise, but for a trip that long you may want someting that is thoughtfully designed for such a trip.

I've used the North Face Tadpole 23, and found it to be great on a lot of counts.  Light weight, roomy, well-designed....

Routes / Pacific Coast Route advice
« on: October 11, 2007, 12:01:05 pm »
I too am on the east coast, and my son and I have done the route twice.  You're free to contact me directly if you like, but here are a few of our thoughts:  the book is great, but don't bring it with you, just read it now because you're excited and want to dream of things to come.  There are plenty of services along the way.  Our absolute favorite section is from Lincoln City, OR to the Golden Gate (700+ miles).  There are pros and cons to any time of year that you go.  Spring will be cooler with less traffic, summer the opposite.  I wouldn't worry a whole lot about the traffic though.  You have plenty of shoulder and it thins out after Gold Beach for awhile.  You definitely want to go North-South. If you need suggestions regarding bike shipping and a possible ride to the coast depending upon where you start from), I can give you some thoughts on that as well.  Good luck, it's really the best ride!

Routes / Touring New Zealand
« on: July 21, 2007, 01:52:22 pm »
I'm looking for info regarding a possible tour in New Zealand.  Knowing nothing about the country, I'm starting from scratch and am open to any suggestions, routes, sources for maps, etc.  I'm not looking to join a group, it would be a self-contained trip for 2 experienced riders.  Thanks!  LT

Routes / Sydney to Melbourne Australia

We were actually playing around with a similar idea, but our time frame doesn't coincide with yours.  I'd appreciate any info you may come across.  I contacted the Bicycle Federation of Australia and was told to contact Craig Bagnall at enquires@cyclingoutbackoz.com.au ot http://www.cyclingoutback.com/

Finally, another resource that may be helpful to you is the Australian Cyclist magazine website at australiancyclist.com.au.

Appreciate the info.  What sort of mileage did you average?

We're thinking about a trip for next summer that would involve a self-contained ride heading south from Jasper, AL, through Montana, etc.  Any comments about the camping would be appreciated.  I'm particularly curious about the bears.  Thanks.

Just did the trip this summer with my son.  You are in for a real treat!  You might check with the folks at The Bike Gallery in Portland.  They were really helpful to us.
