This is a good thread. I always make eye contact if we're coming from opposite directions. I'll usually lift a few fingers and nod. If they don't make eye contact which does happen I just keep on riding. Overtaking someone I usually say on your left....then thank you, or have a good ride, or nice bike, or you're cute ( if it's a woman : )

I used to shift front and rear at the same time too. Works well if everything is adjusted properly, but it took a lot of concentration, and was also pretty noisy. My speed hub is much more quiet in comparison. Now I shift without really thinking about it. Back six, or up three, it's pretty seamless and intuitive.  

There are simply tradeoffs between derailleurs and IGH. Personally I'd take my Sram XO before any other IGH except my speed hub. Rohloffs are somewhat heavy and expensive, but for me it's been great. I bought mine without even having ever seen one before. They are imo worth the money, and highly recommended but buy new. Don't buy a used speed hub unless you know a great deal about them.

I have a Rohloff. It's been flawless. Wouldn't give it up for anything, and no I would never consider a belt.

i have a Rohloff on my Surly Pugsley, and plan on doing the northern tier. The recommended gear combinations by Rohloff include tandems and world class athletes. In other words, you can use a ' forbidden ' gear combo with no harm done if you are not a team of world class athletes on a tandem, and many do use lower gearing with no ill effects that I'm aware of.

I have a 36/17 on 29 wheels ( Pugsley has 26"rims, but effectively 29 " tires ) which gives me 17.1 - 90.1 g.i. I love that gear combination. If you buy one, buy new. I would suggest never buying off ebay or second hand. Cycle Monkey is the US distributor for Rohloff. Contact them if you have any questions.

I fail to see the purpose of this thread. You've already made one with your assessment of the NuVinci. You state after you were convinced of the advantages of IGH you came away unimpressed. What do you want to know that you don't already know ? The mistake you made imo is not buying a Rohloff. Not meaning to knock NuVinci or Alfine, but you couldn't get me to use one. Rohloff is another matter. I love mine. It's been flawless. Mine's set up 17.1 - 90.1 g.i. which is perfect for my needs. I can totally justify the expense, and the weight.  No need to justify the complexity, because the reliability is legionary.

I'd have no problem touring the world with my Rohloff, and if there were ever a problem, Rohloff is also legionary at making sure you're back on the road in an absolute minimum of time. You'll find very few who are dissatisfied with their Rohloff. I can count less than a handful on all the forums I frequent, and it's almost always because they bought one off eBay where the previous owner managed to damage the hub somehow, and they weren't the original owner, so they dumped their problem on an unsuspecting victim instead of paying to have the hub fixed. Also, one isn't paying a very large sum to avoid/lube external gears and chain/cassette replacement as you suggest.

 I paid for the total experience, and that's what I got. I found Zen.
